SPORTS MEDICINE
Student-Athletes at Winston-Salem State University have the benefit of receiving care at two athletic training rooms on the campus of Winston-Salem State University. Housed in the Bowman Gray Field House, the state-of-the-art primary athletic training room was built in 2007 along with numerous other athletic facilities housed in the building. For those who compete in the C.E. Gaines Center and/or Whitaker Gymnasium, care is provided in the athletic training room housed on the first floor of Whitaker Gymnasium. Both facilities are well-stocked and are managed by a top-notch sports medicine staff.
All Winston-Salem State University student-athletes receive first-class care from the WSSU Sports Medicine staff which is comprised of a team of certified athletic trainers, family practice physicians, orthopedic surgeons, sports medicine consultants, and a group of undergraduate students who are completing clinical experiences in the Department of Human Performance and Sports Sciences.
Winston-Salem State University student-athletes will have access to two state-of-the-art athletic training rooms. One, located in the Bowman Gray Field House functions as the primary location of rehabilitation. there is also another athletic training room in Whitaker Gymnasium. The smaller of the two, the Whitaker Gymnasium athletic training room is equipped with the appropriate care for the student-athletes of Winston-Salem State University.
The Sports Medicine Program at WSSU is closely associated with the Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center Department of Sports Medicine. As a result, all injured student-athletes at Winston-Salem State University receive immediate attention from physicians with the highest credentials.
The Winston-Salem State University Sports Medicine Department is dedicated to protecting and enhancing the health, safety, and welfare of the student-athletes of Winston-Salem State University by providing a safe environment and the best possible and most expedient healthcare. This will be accomplished through the six domains of athletic training as established by the National Athletic Training Association.
In all cases, the ultimate total well-being of each student-athlete is a top priority. WSSU’s aggressive and functional approach encompasses a wide array of Sports Medicine Consultants. Several rehabilitation programs may include osteopathic manual medicine, exercise physiology, nutrition, biomechanical evaluations, massage therapy, and orthopedic surgeons. The sports medicine staff is led by Director of Sports Medicine John Lavender.
