WINSTON LAKE GOLF COURSE

The Rams golf team calls the Winston Lake Golf Course their home. With its elegant design and strong cultural history, the course has earned well-deserved and iconic status both on the local and national scenes.

The course offers golfers a unique experience that allows golfers a competitive, yet comfortable golfing experience. The course was carved out of 480 acres of rolling woodland by famed golf course architect Ellis Maples and provides a beautiful setting for a great round of golf. Recent upgrades include Diamond Zoysia greens that have been reshaped, enlarged, and leveled to offer more options for pin placement, allowing golfers to play the scenic course without risking their handicap.

The Winston Lake Golf Course has a rich and storied history in the Winston-Salem, N.C. community. The course was proposed by the Allen group in 1952 with the first nine holes being opened on June 16, 1952.  It was on May 31, 1962, when the city of Winston-Salem, N.C. signed a contract with Ellis Maples to design and supervise the construction of nine additional holes for the golf course. The funds to develop the additional holes were given by R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company, Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation, Hanes Hosiery Mills Company, P.H. Hanes Knitting Company, Hanes Dye & Finishing Company, and Wachovia Bank & Trust. The additional holes were opened for play in 1964.

In 2010, he was inducted into the National Black Golf Hall of Fame in the category of organizations and locations. The course earned its place on the national stage for its history of hosting numerous tournaments and providing an opportunity to golf to the Winston-Salem, N.C. community.
