Markus McElveen enters his fifth season at WSSU.
He is a veteran football coach and leader of men with more than 15 years of experience at the collegiate and high school levels. Currently, serving as Defensive Coordinator and Associate Head Coach at Winston-Salem State University. Markus has established himself as defensive innovator, and mentor of young men.
During McElveen’s first season as the Defensive Coordinator, the Rams defense was ranked nationally and recognized by the AFCA. They finished the season # 10 in total defense, #1 in first down defense, and #4 in red zone defense in the nation (All of D2). They also finished #1 in total defense, #1 first down defense, #1 in red zone, #2 in rushing defense, and #5 in passing defense in the CIAA.
Under his leadership, the Rams’ defense achieved a top ten national ranking, a top redzone defense and a defense that ranked 4th in efficiency amongst all schools in the CIAA this past season. So far under his tutelage, six student athletes received All-Conference accolades (Justin Fleming, Camar Kyle, Avery Hall, Cj Brown, Evan Powell, and Jupe Alston).
Prior to joining WSSU, Markus served as Defensive coordinator for Bunnell (CT) and Norwalk (CT) high schools. His contributions helped to produce three of the top defensive linemen and a top linebacker in the state of Connecticut (James Makszin, Cj Newton, Jermey Jimenez and Marlon Brown). His career also includes a successful stint at Shaw University where he served as the defensive line coach.
A native of Connecticut, Markus holds a bachelor’s degree in Therapeutic Recreation and a minor in Psychology from Shaw University. During his career at Shaw University, he was a 4-year starter, a Lindsey All American, 2-time all-conference selection, a 3-time academic All American, and a 3-time CIAA champion. Markus is an active member of the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA).
Markus’s coaching philosophy is centered around developing a culture that is driven by player development and discipline.
