Antonio Wells joined the Winston-Salem State University cross country/track & field programs in the summer of 2018 and is entering his 7th year with the Rams.
Coach Wells and the Rams won the 2025 CIAA Outdoor Championship and coach was named CIAA Coach of the Year. He coached Charnessa Reid to All-American status and Briana Benloss to second-team All American. He has accounted for 10 school record performances across 100H, 100m, 400m, LJ, 4x400. He had 5 individual CIAA Champions. He also coached 23 NCAA Provisional performances,
He is in his 6th year as Head Coach of the Cross Country/Track & Field programs. Under Coach Wells’ head coaching tenure, WSSU has produced 6 All-CIAA Cross Country Runners, Top 3 CIAA team finishes across cross country, indoor and outdoor track and field, (5x 2nd place, 1x 3rd place), 2022 CIAA Outdoor Track & Field Champions, 1x 18 CIAA Track & Field Individual Champions, 1 national qualifier, 3 USTFCCCA All-Academic Teams, numerous USTFCCCA All-Atlantic Region Athletes, numerous All-CIAA Conference performances, and 8 School Records.
He came to Winston-Salem State after two years at Morgan State University in the NCAA Division I’s Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC). During his time with the Bears, he coached seven All-MEAC performers. Prior to joining the staff at Morgan State University, Wells spent two seasons at Kentucky State University of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC). During that time, he helped guide the Thoroughbreds to several honors, including a third-place finish at the 2014 SIAC Men’s Cross-Country Championship, a school record in the men’s 800 m run and six individual and one relay United States Track & Field/Cross Country Association (USTFCCA) All-South Region honors. In 2015, he helped the Thoroughbreds produce two All-SIAC runners in cross country and eight NCAA Division II All-Americans. For his efforts, he was named the USTFCCCA South Region DII Men’s Assistant Coach of the Year. He began his coaching career at his alma mater Fort Valley State University where he coached for two seasons with the Wildcats. Alongside Head Coach Ella O’Kelley, he had a successful tenure, helping to produce four All-Americans, a three-time triple jump national champion, five SIAC champions, 24 All-SIAC outdoor track & field performers, and the runners-up in the 2011 SIAC Women’s Track & Field Championship. He also helped to produce three school record-setting performances.
In addition to having a strong career as a student-athlete. He was a three-time All-SIAC performer at his alma mater Fort Valley State. He also became the school record holder in the steeplechase and the 2008 cross country MVP.
Wells is a graduate of Fort Valley State with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology.
