Mark Yamane serves as the Head Women’s Tennis Coach at Winston-Salem State University, bringing a dynamic blend of coaching experience, player development expertise, and high-level tournament operations to the Rams program. A passionate and detail-oriented leader, Yamane has quickly established himself as a driving force in building a competitive and culture-driven team environment.
Yamane joined the WSSU tennis program in March 2024 as an assistant coach, where he played a pivotal role in one of the program’s most notable turnarounds. After arriving midseason with the team holding an 0-8 record, he helped guide the Rams to a 5-11 finish and a berth in the CIAA Tournament semifinals. During that stretch, WSSU secured key victories, including a 5-2 win over Livingstone College and a dominant 5-0 sweep of Virginia State, showcasing the team’s growth and resilience.
Elevated to head coach, Yamane emphasizes a competitive yet supportive culture, fostering an environment where student-athletes are challenged to perform at their highest level while feeling supported both on and off the court. His approach blends technical development, mental toughness, and team cohesion.
In addition to his collegiate coaching experience, Yamane brings an extensive background in tennis event management at the professional level. Most recently, he served as an Assistant Tournament Director for an ATP Challenger event in the fall and stepped into the role of Tournament Director for two ITF World Tennis Tour events during the winter. These experiences reflect his ability to operate at the highest levels of the sport, managing logistics, player relations, and tournament operations with professionalism and precision.
Yamane’s connection to tennis runs deep. A former standout junior player, he won multiple USTA tournaments and reached the semifinals of the North Carolina high school state championships. He continued his playing career at Wake Forest University as a member of the club tennis team and was part of the program during its 2018 NCAA Championship run.
Beyond competition, Yamane has extensive experience as a tennis instructor and clinician, working with players of all ages and skill levels. His commitment to development extends into the community, where he has mentored youth and contributed to growing the game of tennis at the grassroots level.
A graduate of Wake Forest University with a degree in Business and Enterprise Management, Yamane combines strategic thinking with a passion for athletics, positioning him to lead WSSU women’s tennis into a new era of success.
