Final Stats
Winston-Salem, NC - The Wake Forest University women's basketball team turned 31 turnovers into 41 points as they cruised past the Lady Rams of Winston-Salem State University by the score of 97-43 in exhibition basketball action at the LJVM Coliseum on Thursday evening.
The Lady Rams ran nearly evenly with the Demon Deacons during the first 20 minutes of play as Wake Forest's largest lead would be only a ten point cushion at 25-15 with 10:12 remaining in first half.
WSSU would trim that lead to a more manageable eight points heading into the locker room at halftime as the Lady Rams looked to be in good shape, trailing 35-27.
The second half of play would prove to be the deciding factor in the contest as the home-team Demon Deacons outscored the Lady Rams 62-16 in the game's final 20 minutes.
Wake Forest mounted a 21-6 run over the first six minutes of the second half of play to put the game out of reach as they pushed their lead to 56-33 with 13:37 remaining in the contest.
The Lady Rams would be their own worst enemy as they went 6:19 of play without a point. Following a Cherena Douglass jumper with 8:28 remaining in the contest, WSSU would not score a point until a Kadina Baldwin free throw broke the scoring drought with 2:09 to play.
During that span Wake Forest scored 16 more points to put the finishing touches on the Lady Rams en route to the exhibition-game victory.
Leading the way for the Lady Rams was Candice Saunders who recorded 10 points as she was the only WSSU player to break into double-digits. Newcomer Keoshia Worthy recorded nine points for WSSU in the losing effort.
Wake Forest was paced by Cotelia Bond-Young who led all scorers with a game-high 21 points on seven of 11 shooting from the field. Bond-Young was joined by three other WFU players in double digits as Deidre Naughton tallied 19 points, Porsche Jones recorded 11 points and Keila Evans chipped in with 10 points.
The Lady Rams fall to 0-1 on the exhibition season as Wake Forest improves to 1-0.
WSSU returns to action on November 15, 2005 at 5:30 pm as they welcome Queens University (NC) to the Gaines Center for the 2005-06 regular-season opener.
