Rams Rally Falls Short in 7-4 Loss to Chowan

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

MOCKSVILLE, NC – The Winston-Salem State Rams (11-11, 1-1- CIAA) mounted a late rally, but the team could not pull out the win in a tough 7-4 loss to the Chowan Hawks (9-9, 1-1 CIAA), Sunday evening at Rich Park in nearby Mocksville, N.C. Though the Rams mounted a furious seventh-inning rally, the Rams could not hold on to pick up the win to take their first conference loss of the season.

The Rams took the loss after an offensive battle that saw some great efforts by both teams. The two teams combined for 19 total hits in the game, with the Rams totaling eight. WSSU freshman outfielder Jacob Nunn recorded a pair of hits in the game while six other Rams recorded one hit each. The Rams totaled three home runs in the game with junior first baseman Aaron Jones hitting a two-RBI homer while junior Brandon Harrison and senior outfielder Dominique Fitzgerald both added solo home runs of their own in the game.

Both teams opened the game with scores as each notched a pair of first inning runs. After the Rams allowed the Hawks to score a pair of first inning runs, WSSU answered when Jones hit a two-run home run to tie the game. However, WSSU ran into some struggles midway through the game, allowing five unanswered runs. The team allowed two fourth inning runs and three in the fifth inning. Saddled with a 7-2 deficit heading into the seventh and final inning of the game, the Rams mounted a rally. Harrison and Fitzgerald recorded back-to-back solo home runs to cut the WSSU deficit down to just three runs. However, the effort was as much as the Rams could muster in the loss.

The Rams and Hawks will close out their three-game series tomorrow when they meet in a 1:00 p.m. single game at Rich Park in Mocksville, N.C. For more information on Rams baseball, contact the WSSU Office of Athletic Media Relations at (336) 750-2143 or log on to www.WSSURams.com.
