WSSU Rams Sweep Double Header From St. Augustine's Falcons

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Winston-Salem State Rams swept a double header from the St. Augustine's Falcons on Saturday 7-6 in nine innings and 4-1 in seven innings.

With the two wins, Winston-Salem State moves to 16-9 overall and 7-3 in the CIAA. St. Augustine's drops to 9-17 overall and 3-3 in the CIAA.

In game one, Leland Clemmons drove in three runs and three different Rams had two hits each in WSSU's 7-6 extra innings win.

WSSU looked strong early and scored five runs in the second inning on three hits with rbi's from Rafael Gonzalez and Gavin Culler, as well as a three run bases clearing triple by Leland Clemmons.

But the Falcons would chip into the Rams lead with three runs in the fifth inning and two in the sixth to tie the game, and then scored in the one in the seventh to take the lead.

Levi Grassley would tie the game in the bottom half of the seventh to send it into extra innings.

The game would remain tied until the bottom of the ninth, when Colby Keane singled home Aaron hatch to give WSSU the 7-6 win.

Although Wesley Helsabeck was dominating for four innings, Eric Corlett picked up the win. The Rams bullpen gave up nine hits and six run before Corlett would come on and shut down St. Augustine's.

Leland Clemmons went two for five with a run scored, a triple and three runs batted in. Colby Keane and Devin McLemore each went two for four, with Keane picking up an rbi, and McLemore scoring a run. Rafael Gonzalez and Gavin Culler each had rbi's.

In the second game, Aaron Hatch pitched a complete game and Leland Clemmons, Ray Crawford and Devin McLemore each had rbi's as the Rams defeated St. Augustine's University, 4-1 .

WSSU scored first, as Ray Crawford brought home Leland Clemmons on a groundout to the right side of the infield.

The Rams would plate three more runs in the second, as a Devin McLemore single up the middle scored Rafael Gonzalez, followed by an rbi double from Leland Clemmons that scored McLemore and Chris Kane.

St. Augustine's would finally get on the board in the third inning, but could only manage one run.

Aaron Hatch would completely shut down the Falcons as he pitched his first complete game, allowing just four hits, and one run. He also struck out five while only walking one.

Leland Clemmons finished the game one for two with two rbi's and a run scored, while Rafael Gonzalez finished two for three with a run scored. Colby Keane, Chris Kane and Devin McLemore each finished one for three, with Kane scoring a run and McLemore picking up an rbi and also scoring a run.

Winston-Salem State and St. Augustine's Falcons will resume play at 10:00 a.m. on Sunday, for another double header. The games are being moved up in anticipation of inclement weather forecast for Sunday afternoon.
