Box Score MILLEDGEVILLE, GA – Winston-Salem State allowed one big inning for Georgia College and could not overcome the deficit late, as the Rams fell 6-3 to the Bobcats on Thursday at John Krtz Field on the Georgia College campus.
Georgia State scored first as they were able to plate a run in the bottom of the first, helped out by an error by Scott Wells on a sac bunt.
But the Rams battled for three runs in the second inning, after back to back walks to start the inning, Levi Grassley reached on a throwing error by Georgia College, scoring Alex Grubb. Leland Clemmons would bring home Rafael Gonzalez and Levin Grassley on a base hit through the middle to give WSSU a 3-1 lead after 2.5 innings.
Georgia College would come back and explode for four runs on three hits, coupled with a WSUS error in the bottom of the second inning to go back out in front, 5-3.
The Bobcats would use six pitchers on the afternoon to hold the Rams at bay, and the home team would pick up one more run in the fifth inning, to take a 6-3 lead.
Winston-Salem State would have chances o score runs in the sixth and seventh innings, but their rally would come up short each time, as they would not be able to produce anymore runs, and eventually would go down to defeat, 6-3.
Rafael Gonzalez led the Rams at the plate, going two for three with a run scored, while Leland Clemmons went one for four with two runs batted in. Ray Crawford and Conner Andrus each went one for three and Aaron Hatch picked up a hit going one for four. Alex Grubb and Levi Grassley each scored a run for the Rams.
Scott Wells took the loss for Winston-Salem State, as he lasted just 1.1 innings, allowing five runs (3 earned), three hits, three walks and one strikeout. Jordan Carlton came on in relief and pitched 4.2 innings, allowing one run and six hits while striking out four. Wesley Helsabeck pitched 2.0 innings, allowing two hits while striking out three.
Tomorrow's game versus Bluefield State, scheduled at 1:00 p.m. at BB&T Ballpark in downtown Winston-Salem, has been postponed in advance of inclement weather expected to roll through the Triad on Friday afternoon. Details for a makeup on Saturday will be provided when details are wrapped up.
