Rams Fade Late in 69-65 Overtime Loss to Brevard

Box Score

WINSTON-SALEM, NC – The Winston-Salem State University Rams (2-4) controlled much of the game, but fell just short in a 69-65 overtime loss to the Brevard College Tornados (1-3), Wednesday evening. After leading for much of the game, the Rams ran out of gas late in the fourth quarter and in the overtime period as the team took its second home loss of the season.

The Rams had some good spots in the game, but the team was plagued by turnovers and some missed opportunities late in the game. Offensively, the Rams had a solid outing with 65 points, the second-highest point total of the season. The team shot 39.2% from the floor with the duo of sophomore forward Briana Arnold and junior forward Jasmine Carter both nearly recorded double-doubles with 12 points and nine rebounds each in the game. Sophomore center Kandace Tate continued her solid play this season with 10 points in the game while senior guard Awa Kalmstrom added 10 points. The team did have its share of struggles as they shot 26.7% (four-for-15) from the three-point line and committed 22 turnovers in the game.

The beginning of the game was a strong for the Rams as the team controlled the entire first quarter and took a 15-9 first quarter lead of the quarter came at the 3:49 mark in the quarter when a Carter three-pointer left the team on top, 13-5. From there, the team cruised through the quarter with the lead. The Rams pushed their lead to double digits in the second quarter when a lay-up from Edwards at the 3:39 mark left the team on top, 26-15. From there, the Rams kept their 11-point cushion before a late Brevard score left the Rams on top, 30-21 at halftime.

The Rams continued to control the game as they outscored Brevard 16-14 to stay on top, 46-35, but it was in the fourth quarter that troubles began for the Rams as they were outscored 21-10. After a Kalmstrom free throw with 10 seconds left kept the team on top, 56-53, the Tornados came back with a three-pointer at the buzzer to tie the game for the first time since the opening minutes.

After controlling all four quarters of the game, the Rams surrendered their lead for the first time since the opening minutes when a Brevard three-pointer with 4:20 left in overtime left the Rams trailing, 59-58. From there, the Rams went down by as many as three points, 58-61 with 4:08 left, but the Rams would not relent just yet. The Rams regained the lead at the 2:29 mark when Carter's second three-pointer of the game left the Rams on top, 63-62. Unfortunately, the WSSU offense would not produce much for the remainder of the game. After a pair of Kalmstrom free throws with 1:08 left that gave the Rams a 65-64 lead, the Rams were held scoreless as Brevard scored five unanswered points, including a three-pointer and a clutch pair of free throws that sealed the 69-65 WSSU loss.

With the loss, the Rams fall to 2-4 on the season. The team will break for exams before returning to action to take on the Concord Mountain Lions on Monday, December 14th.
