Rams Close Out Spike Out Hunger Challenge with Three-Set Win Over West Virginia Wesleyan

Box Score

WINSTON-SALEM, NC – The Winston-Salem State Rams (2-1) closed out the 2015 Spike Out Challenge in style when the team took a dominant three-set win over the West Virginia Wesleyan (0-3) Bobcats. The Rams were impressive in all three sets, 25-23, 25-19, and 25-15.

The Rams took the win behind a stellar overall effort with 38 kills while allowing just 19 kills by the Bobcats. WSSU junior outside hitter Teynia Shepherd led the way for the Rams with 17 kills in the match while sophomore outside hitter Sydney Holland added 11 kills.

Though the Rams pulled away late to win the match, the team had to battle early but rounded into form later in the match. The first set was a real battle between the two teams as they battled to a 21-21 tie with neither side leading by more than two points for the set. After playing to a 23-23 tie, the Rams scored on a Bobcat attack error and a WSSU service ace to win the set. The second set was much less thrilling as the Rams took control early and never looked back. The Rams kicked things off by jumping out to a 9-3 lead. The Bobcats answered the WSSU run with a strong effort of their own and forced WSSU to surrender its lead, 16-18. However, the Rams would have the final say in the set when they outscored the Bobcats, 9-1 to take the 25-19 set win. The momentum carried over into the final set of the match where the Rams closed out the match. After playing to a 13-13 tie, the Rams kicked things into gear to finish off the win, outscoring the Bobcats, 9-1 to take a 21-14 lead. From there, the Rams allowed just one more point to the Bobcats and cruised to the 25-15 win to seal the match victory.

With the win, the Rams improve to 2-1 on the season. The team will return to action next weekend when they take part in the Virginia State Tournament. For more information on Rams volleyball, contact the WSSU Office of Athletic Media Relations at (336) 750-2143 or log on to www.WSSURams.com.
