Box Score 2 WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Winston-Salem State Rams and University of Charleston Golden Eagles split a double header on Saturday after at BB&T Ballpark in Winston-Salem, with UC taking game one , 3-1, and the WSSU Rams bouncing back in game two, 12-1 with the win.
With the split, WSSU moves to 5-8 overall, while the Charleston Golden Eagles move to 1-3 on the season.
In game one, the University of Charleston got on the scoreboard first, with a run in the top half of the first inning, on a Zach Hunter RBI.
In the bottom of the first, Jayson Baytop doubled, when was brought home on a Philip Page single to right field to tie the game at 1-1.
The Golden Eagles picked up single runs in the third and fifth innings, and their pitching staff kept the Rams off balance and unable to produce a big hit when needed, and went on for a 3-1 win.
Although the Rams outhit the Golden Eagles, WSSU could not get the big hit with runners on base, and left 14 runners on base for the game.
Justin Norton took the loss for WSSU, pitching 7.2 innings, allowing eight hits and three runs, while striking out nine. Marcus McKoy pitched 1.1 innings, striking out three.
Nathan Steger finished 3 for 4 with a double, while Michael McNamara and Emilio Abreau also went 2 for 4. Phillip Page went 2 for 5 with a run batted in, and Willie McRae and Jason Baytop each collected hit, with Baytop hitting a double and scoring a run.
In game two, WSSU wasted no time in putting runs up, scoring twice in the first and five times in the second to break the game open early.
WSSU scored three more time in the fourth inning and got a two run home run from the bat of Landon Steiner in the sixth inning, to put the game totally away for the Rams.
Nathan Steger picked up his third win of the season for WSSU, going 5.0 innings, allowing just two hits and one run while striking out five. Orlando Cannon pitched one inning, giving up one hit while striking out three and Eric Corlett also pitched one inning, striking out three.
Nathan Steger continued his hot day at the plate, going 4 for 4, with three runs batted in and two runs scored including two doubles, while Jason Baytop went 3 for 3 with two runs batted in and three runs scored and also had one double. Baytop also had three stolen bases in the contest. Rashad Webster finished 2 for 4, with one RBI and one run scored. Landon Steiner went 1 for 4 with two runs batted in and one run scored, including a two run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning. Willie McRae went 1 for 4 with two runs scored and Emilio Abreau finished 1 for 4 with one RBi and one run scored. Ivan Acuna went 1 for 2 with two runs batted in and one run scored, and Phillip Page and Randy Norris each collected one hit. Page also picked up a run batted in and Norris scored one run.
The WSSU Rams and University of Charleston Golden Eagles will wrap up the series with a double header on Sunday, starting at 1:00pm at BB&T Ballpark in Winston-Salem.
