Box Score WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. –Winston-Salem State's Brandon Fowler scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the ninth inning, to complete the Rams comeback, to give WSSU a 9-8 win over Lock Haven University Tuesday evening at BB&T Ballpark in Winston-Salem, NC.
With the win, WSSU moves to 9-11 overall, while the Bald Eagles of Lock Haven fall to 4-4 on the season.
The WSSU fell behind big early, allowing four first innings runs, coupled with two more in the third to fall behind 6-0.
The Rams would battle back in bottom of the third inning, when Willie McRae reached on an error from the Bald Eagle shortstop, allowing Emilio Abreu and Randy Norris to score, followed by a two run home run blast off the bat of Nathan Steger, to allow the Rams to trim the score to 6-4.
Lock Haven answered with a run in the fourth, helped out by a Winston-Salem State error, to push their lead to 7-4.
Winston-Salem State once again rallied with a two run inning. Brandon Fowler would knock in Randy Norris, and a Nathan Steger double to deep center field, scored Emilio Abreu, to tim the Goldn Eagle lead to one, at 7-6.
The Golden Eagles would try one more time to put the nail int he WSSU coffin, by adding a run in the top of the fifth, on a sacrifice fly to give Lock Haven an 8-6 advantage.
WSSU would pull closer in the bottom of the fifth, when Ivan Acuna picked up an rbi, dscoring Phillip Page from third to get the Rams to within one at 8-7.
The cardiac WSSU Rams were not ready to fold, and Ivan Acuna got them going first with a double down the left field line. Acuna advanced to third on a groundout by Randy Norris, and Emilio Abreu would tie the game on a sacrifice fly to right field, allowing WSSU to tie the game at 8-8 heading into the ninth inning.
Jordan Cummings would shut Lock haven down in the top of the inning, once again setting the stage for another improbable WSSU comeback.
The bottom of the ninth started with a walk to Brandon Fowler, and he would reach second on a pickoff attempt gone awry. Nathan Steger and Landon Steiner would be intentionnaly walked loading the bases with no outs. Phillip Page would go down swinging, and Corey Shelton would pop up to the first baseman inducing the infield fly rule. Then on a 1-1- pitch to Ivan Acuna, Brandon Fowler would score on a wild pitch from the Golden Eagle pitcher, to give the Rams a walk off win, 9-8.
Jordan Cummings picked up his second win of the year, pitching the final 1.2 innings, with only one walk. Marcus McKoy went 1.0 innings, allowing four run on four hits, and Eric Corlett also pitched 1.0 innings, allowing two runs on one hit with three walks. Garrison Roy pitched 2.0 innings, giving up two runs on two hits with three walks. Orlando Cannon went 3.1 innings, allowing just one walk.
Nathan Steger finished 2 for 4 with three runs batted in and a run scored. Steger also hit a two run home run and had a one run double. Willie McRae went 1 for 5 with two runs batted in and a run scored, and Emilio Abreu went 2 for 2 with a run batted in and two runs scored. Randy Norris went 2 for 4 with two runs scored, and Ivan Acuna went 1 for 4 with one run batted in and on run scored. Brandon Fowler scored one run and had one run batted in. Corey Shelton and Michael McNamara each had one hit, and Phillip Page scored one run.
The WSSU Rams will host the Vulcans of California (Pa) at 2:00pm on Wednesday at BB&T Ballpark in Winston-Salem.
