Box Score 2 ASHEBORO, NC – Winston-Salem State used a combination of strong pitching and swinging hot bats, as the Rams swept a double header from St. Augustine's University, 11-0 and 17-3, Saturday afternoon at McCrary Park in Asheboro, NC.
The today's two wins, the Rams improve to 21-18 on the season, while the Falcons fall to 15-18 on the year.
In game one, after a scoreless first three innings, WSSU struck first in the fourth. Randy Norris picked up a two out single up the middle, and then stole second base. Michael McNamara doubled down the left field line, scoring Norris to give WSSU a 1-0 lead.
The Rams opened the game up in the fifth, scoring five runs on four hits. Emilio Abreu walked, followed by a single from Nathan Steger. Ivan Acuna would double to left field, scoring Abreu and Steger. Landon Steiner then doubled to right center, scoring Acuna. Randy Norris then sent a bomb over the left field fence, for a two run home run, giving WSSU a 6-0 lead.
In the bottom of the sixth, Orlando Cannon and Willie McRae led off the inning with back to back singles. Jason Baytop then singled up the middle scoring Cannon. Emilio Abreu then singled to left, scoring McRae. Nathan Steger would reach on a strikeout and wild pitch, allowing Jason Baytop to score.
Emilio Abreu would score on a passed ball, and Landon Steiner would drive home pinch runner, Brandon Fowler, on a sacrifice fly to center field.
Justin Norton would sit down the Falcons 1-2-3 in the seventh, giving Winston-Salem State an 11-0 win.
Justin Norton pitched a gem, throwing a complete game, allowing five hits, while walking one and striking out four.
Randy Norris led the WSSU offensive charge, going 2 for 2 with a home run, two runs scored and two runs batted in. Jason Baytop went 2 for 4 with a run scored and a run batted in, while Landon Steiner went 1 for 3 with a run scored and two runs batted in. Ivan Acuna finished 1 for 4 with a run scored and two runs batted in, and Emilio Abreu, Nathan Steger, Orlando Cannon and Willie McRae each went 1 for 3. Abreu also scored twice and had a run batted in, and Steger scored a run and had a run batted in. Cannon and McRae each scored a run, and Michael McNamara went 1 for 4 with a run batted in. Brandon Fowler also scored a run.
In game two, St. Augustine's scored first, putting together back to back doubles, and scoring one run to give the Falcons a 1-0 lead.
Jason Baytop led off the bottom half of the first with a single to center field. Nathan Steger would get hit by a pitch, before Ivan Acuna would reach on a catcher's interference, loading the bases. Randy Norris would come through with a single to left, scoring Baytop and Steger, and giving the Rams a 2-1 advantage.
The Rams would put together a big second inning, as Orlando Cannon led off with a home run to left field. Nathan Steger would double to left, scoring Jason Baytop, and Ivan Acuna would double scoring Emilio Abreu and Nathan Steger. Randy Norris would double down the left field line scoring Acuna, and Michael McNamara would drive home Steiner on a sacrifice fly to right field, pushing WSSU out in front, 8-1.
WSSU would continue to pound on the Falcons pitching in the third, as Jason Baytop would reach on an error by the first baseman, scoring Willie McRae. Ivana Acuna reached on an error by the center fielder, scoring Jason Baytop. Landon Steiner singled to right field, scoring Emilio Abreu, and Randy Norris would continue his hot hitting, driving in Ivan Acuna with a sacrifice fly to right field.
The St. Augustine's Falcons would answer with a run in the top of the fourth, on a wild pitch.
Winston-Salem State would get that run back in the bottom half of the inning, when Jason Baytop drove in Orlando Cannon on a sacrifice bunt.
The Falcons would score a run in the top of the fifth, to trim the Rams lead to 13-3.
WSSU pushed across two runs in the fifth, as Randy Norris doubled to left field, scoring Ivan Acuna, who had reach on a lead off double. Orlando Canon brought home Norris on a sacrifice fly to center field. And added two more runs in the sixth, with runs batted in from Ivan Acuna and Randy Norris, giving WSSU the 17-3 blowout win.
Winston-Salem State University and St. Augustine's University will play a double header on Sunday at McCrary Park, to wrap the four game weekend series. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00pm.
