Box Score 2 ASHEBORO, NC – For the second straight day, Winston-Salem State used a combination of strong pitching and the long ball from the offensive side of the plate, as the Rams swept a double header from St. Augustine's University, 7-3 and 14-0, Sunday afternoon at McCrary Park in Asheboro, NC.
The today's two wins, the Rams improve to 23-18 overall and 9-3 in the CIAA, while the Falcons fall to 12-31 overall and 7-9 in the CIAA.
In game one, WSSU struck first, as they would be able to push across a run in the third inning. After reaching on a fielder's choice, Randy Norris would steal second, before advancing to third on a wild pitch. A Willie McRae single would score Norris to give the Rams a 1-0 lead.
St. Augustine's answered back in the top of the third, as they would string together three hits to score three runs to take a 3-1 lead.
The Rams would plate two runs in the bottom half of hte inning, after Emilio Abreu and Nathan Steger each singled. Ivan Acuna would sacrifice bunt the pair over to the next base, before Emilio Abreu would score on a wild pitch. Landon Steiner would drive home Nathan Steger on a single to center field, as the Rams tied the game at 3-3.
Winston-Salem State would blow the game open in the fourth, as an Emilio Abreu single scored Jason Baytop, and Nathan Steger reached on an error, allowing Emilio Abreu to score. Ivan Acuna would then hit a home run over the left field fence, scoring two, to push the Rams to a 7-3 advantage.
The WSSU pitchers would tame the Falcons over the final two innings, to give the Rams a 7-3 win.
Devin McLemore picked up the win for WSSU, pitching 6.0 innings, scattering seven hits and three runs while walking three and striking out eight.
Emilio Abreu and Willie McRae each went 2 for 3 with a run batted in, while Abreu also scored two runs. Ivan Acuna finished 1 for 2 with a run scored, two runs batted in and a home run. Nathan Steger went 1 for 2 with two runs scored and a run batted in, and Landon Steiner also went 1 for two with a run batted in. Randy Norris also scored a run.
In game two, Winston-Salem State would waste no time in putting the Falcons away early, sending 15 batters to the plate in the inning, as the huge second inning propelled the Ram to a big lead. Randy Norris picked up the first rbi, singling to center, scoring Ivan Acuna. Michael McNamara would hit a three run home run and later, Jason Baytop would drive home Orlando Cannon and Willie McRae scored on an error from the Falcons catcher. Emilio Abreu would drive home Jason Baytop on a sac fly, before Landon Steiner doubled to left center scoring Nathan Steger and Ivan Acuna, to give WSSU a 9-0 lead.
The Rams would use another big inning to salt to the game away, as they would score five more runs on five hits in the fifth inning. Michael McNamara would be hit by a pitch to start the innings, followed by an Orlando Cannon single. Willie McRae would single to load the bases before Jason Baytop would reach on a fielder's choice, scoring Michael McNamara. Emilio Abreu would single scoring Orlando Cannon, and Nathan Steger would hit a mammoth blast to right center field for a three run home run, to give WSSU a 14-0 lead, that they would maintain until the end for the shutout win.
Kanoa Hironaka got the win for the Rams, going 6.0 innings, giving up just two hits with six strikeouts. Tyler Scearce threw the final inning, allowing one hit and one walk with two strikeouts.
Five different Rams had a multiple rbi game, with Nathan Steger going 2 for 4 with a home run, two runs scored and three runs batted in, and Michael McNamara finished 1 for 1 with a home run, two runs scored and three runs batted in. Jason Baytop went 2 for 4 with two runs scored and two runs batted in, and Landon Steiner went 2 for 4 with a run scored and two runs batted in. Emilio Abreu finished 1 for 4 with a run scored and two runs batted in, and Randy Norris would go 2 for 4 with a run scored and one run batted in. Orlando Cannon went 2 for 3 with two runs scored, and Willie McRae would go 2 for 3 with a run scored. Connor Bodenhamer went 1 for 1.
