Rams Defense and Timely Free Throw Shooting Leads To 94-84 Win Over Fayetteville State

FAYETTEVILLE, NC – Winston-Salem State's Robert Colon scored a game high 24 points to lead five players in double figures, as the Rams erased a six point high time deficit, and went on to rolled past the Fayetteville State Broncos, 94-84, at the Felton J. Capel Arena Saturday night in Fayetteville, NC.

With the win, Winston-Salem State improves to 7-10 overall, 3-5 in the CIAA and 1-2 in the Southern Division. Fayetteville State falls to 7-10 overall, 3-6 in the CIAA and 1-2 in the Southern Division.

Fayetteville State jumped out quick on the Rams and by midway through the first half, held a 13 point lead at 26-13.

The Rams would rebound and finished the first half with a 27-13 run to pull within six points at the half, 36-30.

Early in the second half, the Rams ramped up their defensive pressure, and it paid off, as the erased the six point half time deficit, and turned it into a three point lead on an Ameer Jackson three pointer.

Jackson would give the Rams confidence with three consecutive three pointers, along with superior free throw shooting from WSSU.

The Rams would use a 21-13 run to take a 14 point lead with 2:00 left to play, Winston-Salem State would put the game away going 7 of 8 from the charity stripe in the final mites to come away with a big 94-84 division win.

The game was tied five different times, and the lead changed hands three different times.  The WSSU Rams held a commanding 47-27 advantage in bench points.

Robert Colon scored a game high 24 points in leading the Rams, including 15 of 16 from the free throw line, and four rebounds. Ameer Jackson added 20 points, four assists and three rebounds, while TJ Wilson and William Crandell each scored 14 points, with Crandell grabbing five rebounds, and Wilson three boards. Carlos Rankins chipped in 13 points.

Fayetteville State was led by Joshua Dawson, who scored 23 points, pulled down six rebounds and had six assists. Carl McCray added 16 points, and Josh Bryant scored 14 points. William Tibbs added 11 points and seven rebounds.

Winston-Salem State will travel to Johnson C. Smith on Wednesday for a key Southern Division matchup at Brayboy Gym. Game time is set for 7:30pm.
