WSSU RAMS HOLD OFF FAYETTEVILLE STATE BRONCOS, 76-65, FOR KEY HOME WIN

WINSTON-SALEM,  NC  – WSSU got 17 points from Robert Colon, and Ameer Jackson also added 17 points to lead four Rams in double-figure scoring, and ten Rams in the scoring column, as Winston-Salem State captured a key 76-65 home win on Senior Night, over Fayetteville State.

With the win, WSSU improves to 11-13 overall, 6-8 in the CIAA and 4-4 in the Southern Division. Fayetteville State falls to 10-13 overall, 6-8 in the CIAA and 4-4 in the Southern Division.

Early in the first half, the Broncos used a run of 12-2 to put the home team back on their heels.

The WSSU Rams answered with their own 13-2 run over the next five minutes to take their first lead at 15-13.

The game went back and forth through the rest of the half, and then Julius Barnes hit a deep 3-pointer for the Rams to give them the lead, and Rams ran out the last few moments to give WSSU a 36-33 lead to take into the locker room at the half.

Fayetteville State was able to keep the game close in the second half, and even cut the Rams advantage to just one point, several times, but he home standing WSSU Rams were able to regroup and used their shock and awe defensive style to keep the Broncos at bay.

WSSU outscored the Broncos 20-12 in the paint and 29-7 in bench points in the second half, as the Rams were able to come away with a big home win.

The Rams were led by Robert Colon and Ameer Jackson who each scored 17 points, and William Crandell added 11 points and eight rebounds. Carlos Rankins chipped in six points and four rebounds, and Xavier Mills added five points. Michael Adams added three points and Jamel McAllister and TJ Wilson scored two points each. Stephen Pippins added one points and six rebounds for the Rams.

The Broncos were led by Joshua Dawson who scored 20 points and added seven rebounds. Josh Bryant scored 11 points and pulled down four rebounds, while Michael Tyson chipped in eight point and four rebounds. Carl McCray scored six points and Willie Gilmore and Isaiah Vinson added three points each.

WSSU will host the Golden Bulls of Johnson C. Smith University on Wednesday, at 7:30 pm in the CE Gaines Center.
