CARY, NC – Winston-Salem State came away from the DII Baseball Challenge in Cary, NC at the USA Baseball Training Complex with a 3-2 win over the St. Rose College Golden Knights.

With the win, Winston-Salem State moves to 10-11 overall, while St. Rose falls to 1-11 on the 2017 baseball season.

The WSSU Rams have now won five in a row, and six of their last seven games, and are now just one game under .500.

The Rams got on the scoreboard first in the fifth inning, after a Randal Ortiz walk, Landon Steiner singled to left center, advancing Ortiz to third base. Both WSSU runners would advance a base, and Ortiz would score on a passed ball from the St. Rose catcher. Later in the inning, Willie McRae singled to left field, allowing Steiner to score and give the Rams the 2-0 advantage.

The Golden Knights answered right back in the top of the sixth when St. Rose would score a run on a fielder's choice.

Winston-Salem State would add an insurance run in the bottom of the seventh, when Randal Ortiz hit a blast to left field that would clear the fence for a home run,, and give the Rams a 3-1 lead.

St. Rose would get one run in the eighth to make it a game, but WSSU's Landon Steiner would come in, in a relief appearance and close the game out. Randal Ortiz led the way for the Rams at the plate, finishing 1 for 2 with two runs scored and one run batted in. Willie McRae went 1 for 3 with a run batted in and Landon Steiner finished 1 for 2 with a run scored.
