WSSU Rams Escape Richmond With 21-20 Win Over Virginia Union

RICHMOND, VA – The Winston-Salem State University Rams escaped Richmond and the Virginia Union Panthers with a 21-20 win, behind 129 yards from Kerrion Moore and a score and 77 yards from Farrell Murchinson. The WSSU Rams managed 321 yards of Total Offense while holding the VUU Panthers to 261 yards of total offense, in the come from behind win.

The Rams got on the scoreboard first on the night, as Rod Tinsley found an open Darren Dowdell  from five yards out and with Daniel Rivera's PAT, took an early  7-0 lead.

Virginia Union answered with a 60 yard punt return for a touchdown from Lavatiae Kelly to tied the game at 7-7 early in the second quarter.

The Virginia Union Panthers got a score right before halftime that got their fans going and the team excited, as Darius Taylor  scored from 9 yards away on a keeper, to close out a 75 yard, 11 play drive to give them a 14-7 halftime advantage.

The massage was simple for the Rams at the half, go out and kill the Panthers will with a score.

Kerrion Moore who had a big night, did his best to capitalize on his coaches halftime message. Moore would score a touchdown from 9 yards out to tied the game at 14-14, as he capped a 76 yard, nine play drive.

Jefferson Souza would give the Panthers back the lead with a 29 yard field goal with 6:20 left in the third quarter.

But with 11:56 left to play the Rams got their biggest playoff the night, a blocked punt from Stedman Rush, that gave the Rams a first and goal at the one yard line.

On the next play from scrimmage, Rod Tinsley found the endzone and with Daniel Rivera's kick, the Rams took a 21-17 lead.

Virginia Union managed to  creep closer as Jefferson Souza would connect on a 42 yard field goal with 7:58 remaining to put up the final points of the night, 21-20.

Kerrion Moore had a solid game for WSSU, as he finished with 129 yards rushing on 19 carries and scored one touchdown. Farrell Murchinson as 77 yards on 12 carries, and Rod Tinsley finished the night with 24 yards on just four carries and a touchdown.

Rod Tinsley went nine for 62 yards passing on the evening, with two interceptions and one touchdown pass.

Kerrion Moore led the Ram receivers with four catches for 38 yards, while Willl Walton finished with two grabs for 13 yards.

Jahiz Linebarger finished the night with 99 yards of total offense.

Kyrell Williamson led the defense for the Rams with nine tackles and a tackle for a loss, while Kailan Chavis finished the game with seven tackles.

Trae Jackson had six tackles and Jarell Bright finished the game with five tackles, two sakcs, 2 tackles for a loss and a rumble recovery for the WSSU Rams.

For Virginia Union, Darius Taylor led the Panthers with 65 yards rushing on 14 carries and a touchdown, while he also finished the night going 11 of 17 passing for 127 yards.

Lavatiae Kelly led the VUU receivers with 67 yards on five catches and Chazton McKenzie finished with three catches for 26 yards.

Tevin Gordon finished the game with nine tackles and a pass deflection, as Sterling Hammond and Quantaye Battle each has six tackles, with Hammond also coming away with two interceptions and a pass deflection.
