Women’s Basketball set to Begin Regular Season Play in Fairmount Tournament

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C – The Winston-Salem State women's basketball team begins regular season play in West Virginia on November 11th and 12th against Fairmont State University and Concord University.

Last Time Out
Last time out the Rams took on the Wake Forest Demon Deacons in an exhibition game. Grad student, Amaya Tucker led the Rams in scoring with 11 points. The rams were defeated by the Demon Deacons 50-93.

Ram Returners:
WSSU brings back six returners from last season's quad, junior Erin Hall, graduate student O'Shea Hatley, senior Kendra Ross, sophomore Kennedi Simmons, graduate student Amaya Tucker, and sophomore Tania Wilkins. They finished 12-13 and made it to the quarterfinals of the CIAA tournament last season.

Ram Newcomers:
Winston-Salem welcomed in five freshmen (JaKaiya Mack, Prophet Sheffield, Alexandria Warren, Aaliyah Basler, and Jada Douthit), three juniors Hadiya Balser, Jainaya Jones, Makayla Smith, and senior Valencia Carroll during the offseason.

CIAA Preseason:
Amaya Tucker was named to the 2022-2023 All-CIAA Women's Basketball Preseason Team Backcourt after finishing last season averaging 13.6 pts per game, 43.3% field goal, 36.7% 3pt, 66.7% from the free throw line, and 4.2 rebounds per game. Amaya performance led to her achieving All-CIAA Backcourt in the postseason. She was also named to the CIAA All-tournament team.
 
Scouting Report
Last year Fairmont State University finished (15-13, 13-9 Mountain East). They were led by Redshirt Senior Sierra Kotchman who averaged 18.7 ppg. With Kotchman graduating Fairmont will lean on three players who averaged double-figures last year, junior Alyssa DeAngelo, junior Jalen Gibbs, and senior Katy Darnell.

The Concord University Mountain Lions finished (20-11, 13,9 Mountain East) last year. The Mountain Lions were led by graduate student Riley Fitzwater. Fitzwater led the team in scoring averaging 17.9 ppg.  Now it will be on grad student Maggie Guynn turn to lead the Mountain Lions.

The Rams will host North Greenville University on November 16th at 5:30 p.m. in the C.E. Gaines Center.  The theme for the game is Jersey Day.
