Women’s Basketball to Host Morris College; Travel to UVA Wise Monday

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Winston-Salem State University women's basketball team will host Morris College, Saturday, December 3, inside the C.E. Gaines Center. On Monday, December 5, 2022, the Winston-Salem State women's basketball team will travel to UVA-Wise.

Series
The Rams lead the series 1-0, after defeating Morris college on November 22, 2016, 70-53. During that game, at the time WSSU junior center Kandace Tate led the scoring effort for the Rams with 12 points while senior guard Trei Torain recorded her first career double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds in the win. Fellow senior center Jatzmin Johnson added 12 points as well.

Last Time Out
Carolina University Women's Basketball competed in the Jean Edge Classic. Their first game was on Friday, November 11th against Averett University. The Cougars started with a 5-point run but the Bruins found their footing and closed out the first quarter with a 17-12 lead. CU maintained that momentum and was able to get a 17-point lead over the Cougars by halftime. The Bruins were able to stretch their lead to 20 points in the third quarter. Averett tried to get to the basket, but they weren't a match for Carolina's defense. CU took their first game of the tournament with a score of 65-43. 

CIAA Weekly Awards 
Jakaiya Mack was named the CIAA Women's Basketball Rookie Player of the Week for week one. She totaled 9 points, 12 rebounds, five assists, and three steals in a 1-1 weekend for the Rams. She had nine points, five rebounds, and two steals in her first collegiate game, which came against Fairmont State. The freshman added a team-high seven boards, plus two assists, and a steal in the 66-65 win over Concord. 

Jainaya Jones was named the CIAA Women's Basketball Defensive Player of the week for week three after recording 10 points, nine steals, five assists, and two blocks in the Rams' lone game last week-- a 79-46 win over Carolina University. The redshirt junior logged nine of the team's 19 steals, which finished with 33 points off turnovers. The Bayboro, NC native also logged the only two blocks of the game for Winston-Salem State. 

Scouting Report 
Morris College is 0-3 on the year. The last game was on November 12th against Rust College. Jayce Williams led all players with 18 points in the loss. 

UVA Wise women's basketball team is 5-1 on the year. The Cavilers are coming off a win against Coker University 82-75. The Cavilers were led by sophomore forward Katlin Burger who is coming off her career-high of 20 points. Bailey scored 14 of her career-best 20 in the first half while adding six rebounds and three assists to her stat line. Nia Vanzant made 7-of-9 field goal attempts en route to 18 points while Caitlyn Ross scored 14 with Katlin Burger adding 12.

The rams begin conference play against Lincoln University on December 15th at 5:30 p.m. in the C.E. Gaines Center.  All CIAA December games will be free to the public with a canned food item or toiletry.
