GLENVILLE, W.VA. – Late second-half comeback falls short as the Winston-Salem State University women's basketball team fell to Glenville State College 75-63 Saturday afternoon inside Waco Center.
The Rams moved to 6-5 (2-1 CIAA), while Glenville State improved to 11-1 (5-1 MEC).
Amaya Tucker led all scorers with 22 points and
Taniah Wilkins finished with her second double-double of the season (11 points and 11 rebounds).
Jakaiya Mack finished with eight points and
Jainaya Jones led in assists (4).
The Pioneers scored the first basket but a lay-up from
Taniah Wilkins and a three-pointer from
Amaya Tucker gave the Rams a 5-3 lead with 8:43 to play in the first quarter. After tying the game at 7, the Lady Pioneers went on a huge run finishing the quarter up 29-16.
The Rams came within 12 with 6:03 to play in the half but Glenville went into half-time up 16, 45-29.
WSSU's defense went up a notch and a few stops with baskets from
Amaya Tucker,
Kennedi Simmons, and
Taniah Wilkins put the Rams within nine with 7:23 to play in the third quarter. Winston outscored Glenville by one point and went into the fourth quarter trailing 63-58.
Even though Winston outscored Glenville 17-10 in the fourth quarter it was not enough to secure the victory as the Pioneers won 75-63.
WSSU will be back in action on Thursday, January 5th at Virginia State University. Game time is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. inside the Multipurpose Center.
