Men's Hoops Defeat St. Augustine's in Overtime

Box Score

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Cameron Campbell was WSSU's knight in shining armor Saturday night, leading the Rams to a hard-fought 69-62 overtime win against St. Augustine's at the C.E. Gaines Center.  Campbell hit four consecutive free throws in the final 1:16 of regulation and scored 'SU's first five points in overtime.

He led the Rams with 21 points, shooting 50% from the floor (6-12) and connecting on 9-11 free throws.  Javonte Cooke scored 20 points and was the rebound leader with six. Samage Teel scored 16 points in the game that featured 13 lead changes and seven ties.

It was Cooke's three-point play with 2:18 remaining in regulation that enabled WSSU to grab a 47-46 lead.  After a Falcons layup, Cooke countered to put 'SU back up by one with 1:53 remaining.  He also had three critical defensive rebounds and two free throws in overtime.

Both teams experienced sluggish starts to the game.  St. Aug. went up by eight points, its largest lead, with 10:14 to play in the first half.  WSSU's nine-point advantage, its largest lead, came with 21 seconds remaining in overtime.

It took almost five minutes before Cooke's three-pointer put the Rams on the scoreboard.  But the Falcons could only gain a 5-0 lead in the game's first 4:55. It took another 2:44 before either team would score again. The Falcons went ahead 17-12 with 5:23 on the clock.

The Rams first lead in the game came on Cooke's free throw with 23 seconds to play in the first half.  Campbell's layup with 10 seconds to go sent the Rams to the locker room with a 27-24 halftime lead.

The second half was a see-saw battle.  Campbell's layup with 12:52 left in regulation provided 'SU with a 34-30 lead.  The Falcons would regain a one-point lead, 37-36, with 9:04 to go, and a 46-44 lead with 2:35 left in regulation.

Cooke scored five points in 27 seconds to give 'SU a 49-48 lead with 1:53 showing on the clock, and then Campbell took control with his scoring surge that forced the Falcons to keep pace, forcing the extra five minutes.

The win was WSSU's ninth in the last 10 games and the third overtime win in the last four games.  The Rams improved to 15-5 overall and 9-3 in CIAA play and remain undefeated at the Gaines Center this season.

WSSU travels to Claflin for 7:30 tipoff on Thursday night.  The Rams return to the Gaines Center for a crucial matchup against Fayetteville State next Saturday, February 12.  The tip for that game is 4 p.m.
