Women’s Basketball Begins Conference Play on the Road against Bowie State Thursday, then Lincoln (PA) Saturday, and Virginia Union on Monday

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.- The Winston-Salem State University women's basketball team begins their conference slate first taking on Bowie State University, on Thursday, December 14th. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
 
The Lady Rams will then head up to Lincoln (PA) facing off with Lincoln University (PA) on Saturday, December 16th. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. The Rams will end their road trip in Richmond, Virginia on Monday, December 18th taking on Virginia Union University. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.

Series Information vs. Bowie State University
Since 2005 this will be the 17th match-up between the Rams and the Bulldogs. Bowie State has won seven out of the last eight matchups against the Rams. Last year the Rams defeated the Bulldogs on December 19, 2022, 54-48.
 
Series Information vs. Lincoln University (Pa)
Since 2011 the Rams have led the series 10-9. Last year the Rams defeated the Lions 79-61 on December 15th, 2022.
 
Series Information vs. Virginia Union University 
Since 2006, the Panthers lead the series 12-6. The Rams haven't beaten the Panthers since 2015.
 
Last Time Out
The Rams fell to UNC Pembroke in overtime 63-62 on Saturday, December 9th. Kennedi Simmons led the Rams with 23 points, and Amaya Tucker scored 13 points and five assists. Tolisha Walker also scored 13 points.
 
Rams Returners:
The Rams brought back ten returners from last year's team. Sophomores Aaliyah Balser, Jakaiya Mack, Alexandria Warren, junior Kennedi Simmons, redshirt juniors Erin Hall, Taniah Wilkins, senior Hadiya Balser, redshirt seniors Jainaya Jones, Makayla Smith, and graduate student Amaya Tucker.
 
Rams Newcomers:
The Rams welcomed in newcomers Tori Crowder, Haley Dalton, La'Niya Simes, Chloe Williams, Christiana McLean, Starasia Bell-Freeman, Tolisha Walker, and Sierra Hunter.
 
CIAA Preseason:
Amaya Tucker and Kennedi Simmons were named to the 2022-2023 All-CIAA Women's Basketball Preseason Team Backcourt. Tucker is returning as the reigning CIAA Player of the Year. She finished last season averaging 15.6 points per game and led the Rams in three-point percentage with 40%. Tucker also shot 74% from the free-throw line. Simmons was second on the Rams in scoring, averaging 9.1 points per game. Kennedi shot 72% from the free-throw line.
 
Scouting Report
The Rams are led in scoring by Kennedi Simmons with 15.6 points and Amaya Tucker with 14.7 points a game. The Rams are averaging 64.9 points per game.
 
Bowie State University (6-2, 1-0 CIAA)
The Bulldogs defeated Claflin University 62-58 on Saturday, December 2nd. Anii Harris led the Bulldogs with 23 points, followed by Jayla Irvin with 12 points. Anii Harris is the Bulldogs leading scorer averaging 19.6 points a game, followed by Jayla Irvin averaging 10 a game, and the Bulldogs are scoring 67.4 points a game.
 
Lincoln University (5-3, 1-0 CIAA)
The Lions defeated Claflin University 75-71 on Monday, December 11th.  Jaleesa Lanier led the Lions with 24 points, followed by Anyssa Fields with 17 points. Anyssa Fields is the Lions' leading scorer, averaging 10.9 points a game. The Lions are averaging 63.6 points a game.
 
Virginia Union (7-1, 1-0 CIAA)
The Panthers defeated Augusta University 77-57 on December 9th. Ny Langley is the Panthers leading scorer averaging 17.8 points a game, followed by Navaeh Reaves with 11.4 points a game. The Panthers are scoring 69.5 points a game, while giving up 55.6 game.
 
Up Next
The Rams will begin 2024 at home hosting Elizabeth City State University, on Thursday January 4th. Tip-off is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. inside the C.E. Gaines Center.
