WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Winston-Salem State University softball team split in a midweek showdown with Bluefield State Wednesday afternoon.
The Rams defeated the Big Blue 10-0 in game one before falling 12-10 in game two. WSSU is now 3-3 on the season.
How it Happened Game 1
The Rams took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Back-to-back doubles from
Ahmiya Laboy and
Taylor Hilliard helped give add five more runs for the Rams in the bottom of the second to take a 6-0 lead. Winston-Salem pulled away in the bottom of the fourth adding four more runs to Mercy rule.
Sierra Crocker pitched 4.0 innings with two strikeouts moving to 1-1 on the season.
How it Happened Game 2
WSSU had an early 3-0 lead before Bluefield scored six runs in the top of the third to take a 6-3 advantage. The Big Blue scored two more runs in the top of the third to take an 8-3 lead over the Rams. Winston came back swinging in the bottom of the fourth.
Taylor Hilliard, and
Taisha Bratton each had singles and
Teanna Davis had a double all scoring runners on base to cut the lead 8-7. Bluefield added four more runs in the top of the sixth to take a 12-7 lead.
Taylor Hilliard hit a home run in the bottom of the sixth followed by a homerun from
Emma Eckhart in the bottom of the seventh to bring the score to 12-9. The Rams scored one more run in the bottom of the seventh to finish the game 12-10.
Winston-Salem is back in action on March 14th at Fort Valley State in Fort Valley, Georgia. The doubleheader is scheduled for 1:00 pm and 3:00 p.m.
