FORT VALLEY, Ga. – The Winston-Salem State University softball team split in a doubleheader with Fort Valley State on Tuesday afternoon.
The Rams took game one, 8-4 but dropped game two 8-7 to move to 4-4 on the season.
How it Happened – Game 1
FVSU got on the board first scoring two runs in the bottom of the first inning. The Rams answered back in the top of second with two runs of its own. Then, in the top of the third inning, Teonna Davis hit a three RBI double scoring the runners on base to give the Rams a 5-2 lead.
Malia Simmons also hit a double in the inning to give the Rams a 6-2 lead. They secured the win in the top of the fourth with a two RBI home run from
Taisha Bratton to give the Rams an 8-2 lead. FVSU scored two more runs in the bottom of the seventh to make the final score of 8-4.
Alicia Carrington pitched her first game with the Rams earning the victory after throwing 5.0 innings moving to 1-0 on the season.
Sierra Crocker also threw 2.0 innings and had one strikeout.
How it Happened – Game 2
Both teams scored in the first inning, but FVSU took an early 2-1 lead in the bottom of the third. The Rams answered back in the top of the fourth with two runs to bring the score to 3-2. WSSU added to the score after RBI doubles from Teonna Davis and
Malia Simmons to increase the Rams score to 5-2. A scoring error in the top of the sixth inning gave the Rams a 6-2 lead. FVSU added a run in the bottom of the sixth inning to bring the score to 6-3.
Alycia Cunningham hit a homerun in the top of the seventh to give the Rams a 7-3 lead. Fort Valley scored five runs in the bottom of the seventh to seal the game with an 8-7 victory.
The Rams are back in action on tomorrow, March 15 at Benedict College. The doubleheader begins at 1:00 p.m. at Tiger Field in Columbia, South Carolina.
