ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. – The Winston-Salem State University softball team split on day one of the CIAA Round-up after falling to Bowie State early in the day but coming back strong and defeating Virginia Union in the afternoon at the South Sports Complex.
The Rams moved to 7-6 (1-1 CIAA) on the season after Bowie State took game one, 6-1 and the Rams won 11-9 over the Panthers.
How it Happened – Game 1
Both teams went three innings without a score, but Bowie got on the scoreboard first in the top of the fourth inning taking a 1-0 lead. The Bulldogs added a run in the top of the sixth inning to take a 2-0 lead, but the Rams answered back with a run of their own to come within one. BSU pulled away in the top of the seventh scoring four runs to take the 6-1 lead including a homerun from Brittany Brewer.
Alicia Carrington moved to 2-3 on the season after throwing 7.0 innings with four strikeouts.
How it Happened – Game 2
The Panthers got on the board early, scoring four runs to take a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. WSSU answered back with four runs of its own in the top of the second inning to tie the game at 4-4. The Rams took a 7-4 lead in the top of the third adding three runs on a 3RBI triple from
Ahmiya Laboy. Two home runs including a 2RBI one helped the Panthers to tie the game at 7-7. Va. Union increased their lead with another run in the bottom of the fifth to take an 8-7 lead over the Rams.
Taisha Bratton hit a 2RBI home run to give WSSU a 9-8 lead in the top of the sixth inning. The Panthers scored one run in the bottom of the seventh inning to send the game into extra innings. The Rams secured the game with two runs to finish the game with a score of 11-9.
Sierra Crocker pitched 2.1 innings with one strikeout, but
Alicia Carrington finished the game throwing 5.2 innings with two strikeouts and moving to 3-3 on the season.
WSSU is back in action tomorrow, March 24th for day two of the CIAA roundup taking on Shaw University at 11 am and host university Elizabeth City at 4 p.m. inside the South Sports Complex.
