Women’s Basketball Begin Divisional Play Thursday versus St. Augustine’s, travel to Claflin Saturday

WINSTON-SALEM N.C.- The Winston-Salem State University women's basketball team will begin divisional play hosting St Augustine's University, on Thursday, January 18th.  Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. inside the C.E. Gaines Center.
 
The Lady Rams will then travel to Orangeburg, South Carolina taking Claflin University, on Saturday, January 20th. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. inside Tullis Arena.

Series Information vs. St Augustine's University
Since 2006 this will be the 28th match-up between the Rams and Falcons. The Rams lead the series 21-6.  Both teams split their two match-ups last season. The Rams won the first match-up 86-54 on January 14th, 2023. The Falcons won the second match-up 91-80 on February 4th, 2023.
 
Series Information vs. Claflin University
Since 2005 the Rams have led the series 9-3. The Rams won both match-ups last season. The Rams won the first match-up 59-53 on January 18th, 2023. On February 9th the Rams won 78-43.
 
Last Time Out
The Rams fell to Bluefield State 61-53 on Saturday, January 13th. Both Chloe Williams and Kennedi Simmons scored 12 points. Taniah Wilkins and La'Niya Simes each had six points.
 
Rams Returners:
The Rams brought back ten returners from last year's team. Sophomores Aaliyah Balser, Jakaiya Mack, Alexandria Warren, junior Kennedi Simmons, redshirt juniors Erin Hall, Taniah Wilkins, senior Hadiya Balser, redshirt seniors Jainaya Jones, Makayla Smith, and graduate student Amaya Tucker.
 
Rams Newcomers:
The Rams welcomed in newcomers Tori Crowder, Haley Dalton, La'Niya Simes, Chloe Williams, Christiana McLean, Starasia Bell-Freeman, Tolisha Walker, and Sierra Hunter.
 
CIAA Preseason:
Amaya Tucker and Kennedi Simmons were named to the 2022-2023 All-CIAA Women's Basketball Preseason Team Backcourt. Tucker is returning as the reigning CIAA Player of the Year. She finished last season averaging 15.6 points per game and led the Rams in three-point percentage with 40%. Tucker also shot 74% from the free-throw line. Simmons was second on the Rams in scoring, averaging 9.1 points per game. Kennedi shot 72% from the free-throw line.
 
CIAA Weekly Awards
  • Jakaiya Mack was named CIAA Player of the Week for week seven.
  • La'Niya Simes was named CIAA Rookie of the Week for week 10.
 
Scouting Report
The Rams are led in scoring by Amaya Tucker with 11.3 points followed by Kennedi Simmons with 10.7 points and Jakaiya Mack with 9.5 points a game. The Rams are averaging 59.7 points per game.
 
St Augustine University (9-6, 3-4 CIAA) 
The Falcons fell to Johnson C.  Smith 63-60 on Monday, January 15th. Taniyah Greene led the Falcons with 14 points, followed by Lauren Banks with 12 points and eight rebounds. Taniyah is averaging 12.9 points a game, followed by Lauren Banks with 12.7 points per game. The Falcons are scoring 66.6 points a game, while giving up 60.1 points a game.
 
Claflin University (7-7, 1-5 CIAA) 
The Panthers defeated Morris College 97-35 on Saturday, January 13th. Lauren Scott led the Panthers with 24 points, followed by Nya Morris with 14 points and eight rebounds, and Myla Lee chipped in with 13 points and seven rebounds .Lauren Scott is the Panthers leading scorer averaging 14.9 points a game, followed by Nya Banks with 13.6 points per game.
The Panthers are averaging 75.4 points per game.

The Rams will host Shaw University on Wednesday, January 24th. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. inside the C.E. Gaines Center.
