Women’s Basketball Returns Home Hosting Johnson C. Smith Thursday, Livingstone Saturday

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.- The Winston-Salem State University women's basketball team will host divisional rivals this week. First up the Rams will face-off against Johnson C. Smith University on Thursday, February 1st. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. inside the C.E. Gaines Center. The Lady Rams will then take on Livingstone College on Saturday, February 3rd. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. inside C.E. Gaines Center.

Series Information vs. Johnson C. Smith University 
Since 2006 this will be the 30th match-up between the Rams and Golden Bulls. The Rams are currently on a two-game-winning streak against the Golden Bulls.  The Rams won both match-ups last season. The Rams won the first match-up 71-55 on January 26th, 2023. In the second match-up, the Rams defeated the Golden Bulls 69-62 on February 15th, 2023.   
 
Series Information vs. Livingstone College 
Since 2006 the Rams have led the series 16-11. Last season the Rams won both matchups. In the first match-up, the Rams won 88-83 on January 28th, 2023. Then, they took the second match-up 65-56 on February 18th.  
 
Last Time Out
The Rams fell to Fayetteville State University 63-49 on Saturday, January 27th. Erin Hall led the Rams with eight points, followed by Taniah Wilkins, Sierra Hunter Chloe Williams, La'Niya Simes, and Jakaya Mack all with six points.
 
Rams Returners:
The Rams brought back ten returners from last year's team. Sophomores Aaliyah Balser, Jakaiya Mack, Alexandria Warren, junior Kennedi Simmons, redshirt juniors Erin Hall, Taniah Wilkins, senior Hadiya Balser, redshirt seniors Jainaya Jones, Makayla Smith, and graduate student Amaya Tucker.
 
Rams Newcomers:
The Rams welcomed in newcomers Tori Crowder, Haley Dalton, La'Niya Simes, Chloe Williams, Christiana McLean, Starasia Bell-Freeman, Tolisha Walker, and Sierra Hunter.
 
CIAA Preseason:
Amaya Tucker and Kennedi Simmons were named to the 2022-2023 All-CIAA Women's Basketball Preseason Team Backcourt. Tucker is returning as the reigning CIAA Player of the Year. She finished last season averaging 15.6 points per game and led the Rams in three-point percentage with 40%. Tucker also shot 74% from the free-throw line. Simmons was second on the Rams in scoring, averaging 9.1 points per game. Kennedi shot 72% from the free-throw line.
 
CIAA Weekly Awards 
  • Jakaiya Mack was named CIAA Player of the Week for week seven.
  • La'Niya Simes was named CIAA Rookie of the Week for weeks 10, 11 and 12. 
 
Scouting Report
The Rams are led in scoring by Amaya Tucker with 11.1 points followed by Kennedi Simmons with 9.9 points. The Rams are averaging 59.1 points per game.
 
Johnson C. Smith University (10-7, 7-3 CIAA) 
The Golden Bulls fell to Claflin University 82-65 on Saturday, January 27th. Kellis Carmon led the Golden Bulls with 15 points and seven rebounds, followed by Najah Lane with 14 points and six rebounds. Ciara Harris chipped in with 10 points. Ciara Harris is the Golden Bulls leading scorer averaging 14.4 points a game, followed by Kellis Carmon with 11.7 points per game, and Ashlei Kirven with 10.9 points a game. 
The Golden Bulls are scoring 63.5 points a game.
 
They later defeated Shaw University yesterday January 30, 71-49 at Brayboy Gym.
 
Livingstone College (4-10, 2-8 CIAA)
The Blue Bears fell to Mars Hill University 78-59 on Saturday, January 27th. Both Andre'sia Alexander and Jamiah Lane led the Blue Bears with 16 points and eight rebounds.  Jamiah Lane is the Blue Bears leading scorer averaging 11.5 points a game, followed by Samiyah Briggs with 10.0 points per game. Andre'sia Alexander with 9.1 points per game
 
Up Next 
The Rams will travel to Raleigh, North Carolina on Wednesday, February 7th, to take on St. Augustine's University. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. inside Emery Gymnasium.
