Rams Wins Two, Drops One in CIAA Round-Up

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Winston-Salem State University volleyball team won two of the three matches during the CIAA Round over the weekend. The Rams dropped their first match, 3-2 against Bluefield State on Saturday. WSSU bounced back with a 3-2 victory versus Elizabeth City on Saturday evening. The Rams picked up another victory 3-2 versus Virginia State Sunday evening.  

The Rams moved to 3-7 (2-3 CIAA).

How it happened vs.Bluefield State 3-2 (25-20, 25-17, 25-22, 25-22, 15-7) Loss 
In set one, the Rams came out on a 3-0 run. The Big Blue answered back with a 7-1 run giving them a 7-4 lead. The Rams fought back, tying the game at 7-7 on a Zoe Chesson kill. With the Big Blue up 14-10, the Rams went on a 7-0 run giving them a 17-14 lead. The Rams would take set one 25-20. In set two, the Rams were on fire taking an early 4-1 lead. The Rams would extend their lead to 12-6 on a Janai Tillman ace. Using a 4-0 run, the Lady Rams extended their lead to 17-8. WSSU closed out the set on a 4-0 run, taking set two 25-17. 
 
In set three, with the score tied at 3-3 the Big Blue went on a 4-0 run giving them a 7-4 lead. As the score was 11-6 Big Blue, the Rams went on a 4-0 run cutting the Big Blue lead down to 11-10. The Big Blue answered back with a 10-1 run, giving them a 21-11 lead, as they took set three 25-22. In set four, the Big Blue jumped out to an early 5-3 lead. With the Big Blue up 10-7, the Rams went on a 4-0 run, 11-10 on a Janai Tillman ace. Down by two 14-12, the Rams went on a 4-0 run, giving them the lead back 16-14. The Big Blue then answered back with a 4-1 run, putting them up 19-17. The Big Blue would take set four 25-22.
 
In set five, the Big Blue took a quick 3-0 lead. Bluefield State would extend their lead to 8-2. The Big Blue would take set five 15-7.

In set one, in a back-to-back battle, the Vikings got some separation taking a 12-9 lead. Going on a 3-0 run, the Rams tied the game at 12-12 on a Lexis Tatum kill. With the score 21-19 Vikings, the Vikings closed out the set on a 4-0 run, taking set one 25-19. In set two, the Rams took a 6-3 lead on a Janai Tillman kill. With the game tied at 9-9, WSSU went on a 3-0 run, putting them up 12-9. The Vikings answered back, tying the game at 12-12. The Rams would go on a 3-0 run extending their lead to four 20-16. WSSU would take set two 25-21. 
 
In set three the Rams came out on fire with a 9-5 lead on a Lexis Tatum kill. With the score tied 16-16, the Rams took the lead on a 3-0 run 19-16. WSSU closed out on a 5-0 run, taking set three 25-19. In set four, the Vikings took a 5-1 lead. The Vikings extended their 10 points, on a 6-0 run 16-6. ECSU would take set four 25-12. In set five, with the game tied at 4-4, the Rams went on a 5-0 run, taking a 9-4 lead on a Tiara Lindsey ace. The Rams closed the set on a 4-0 run, taking set five 15-8.

How it happened vs. Virginia State (25-12, 25-14, 25-21, 25-20, 15-12) 
In set one, the Rams caught fire with a 5-1 lead. The Rams extended their lead to 13-3 on a 4-0 run. WSSU will take set one 25-12. In set two, the Rams took a 3-0 lead, as the Trojans answered, tying the game at 3-3. The Trojans went on a 6-0 run, extending their lead 14-6. The Trojans took set two 25-14.
 
In set three the Trojans jumped out 3-0 lead, and VSU extended to eight 12-4. The Trojans would take set three 25-21. In set four, with the score 6-2 VSU, the Rams went on a 4-0 run tying the game 6-6 on a Tiara Lindsey ace. As the game was tied 13-13 the Rams went on a 3-0 run, giving them a 16-13 lead. The Rams took set four 25-20. In set five, with the score tied at 3-3, the Rams went on a 6-3 lead on a Lexis Tatum kill. In a 12-12 tie, the Rams went a 3-0 run taking set 15-12 on attack error.
 
Up Next
The Lady Rams will return to action on Thursday, October 10th hosting Johnson C. Smith University. The match will begin at 6:00 p.m. inside Whitaker Gymnasium.
