Rams Defeat Livingstone in Five Set Thriller Wednesday Night

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.  – The Winston-Salem State University volleyball team overcame a 2-0 deficit, defeating Livingstone College 3-2 inside Whitaker Gymnasium Wednesday night.  

The Rams improved to 13-9 (10-4 CIAA).

In set one, the Blue Bears went on an early 3-0 run, taking a 6-3 lead. WSSU cut the lead down to 6-5 on a Janai Tillman kill. With the score 11-5 LC, the Rams went on a 5-0 run 11-10 on a Lexis Tatum kill. The Blue Bears struck back with a 3-0 run, making the score 14-10. Livingstone extended their lead to 19-12. The Blue Bears took set one 25-16.

In set two, the Rams took a fast 3-0 lead on LC attack error. Livingstone fought back tying the game 5-5. WSSU answered back with a 4-0 run, taking a 9-5 lead on an LC attack error. The Rams extended their lead to 14-10 on a Kamiyah Wilson, forcing Livingstone to call a timeout. The Blue Bears went on a 4-0 run, tying the game at 14-14. In a back and forth battle the Rams took a 20-18 lead on a Blue Bears attack error. LC answered on a 3-0 run, taking a 21-18 lead.  The Blue Bears went on a 4-0 run, taking a 24-22 lead. The Blue Bears took set two 25-22 and led the match 2-0.

In set three, the Rams started on a 5-0 run on an LC attack error. LC went on a 4-0 run, making the score 8-7 for the Rams. The Rams took a two-point lead 11-9 on a Lexis Tatum kill. LC went on a 3-0 tying the game 13-13. LC took a 17-14 lead. The Rams went on a 6-0 run taking a 22-20 lead on a Blue Bears attack error. The Rams took set three 25-23 and trailed the match 2-1.

In set four, the Blue Bears opened with a 4-1 run. WSSU answered back with a 3-0 run, tying the game 4-4 on a Lexis Tatum kill. The Blue Bears went on a 4-0 run, taking an 8-4 lead.  Going on a 4-0 run, the Rams tied the game 9-9 on an LC attack error. The Rams kept the fight tying the game 15-15 on a Blue Bears error. WSSU took a 21-18 lead on a Malani Martin kill. The Blue Bears tied the game to 24-24 on a 3-0 run. The Rams closed out the set on a 3-0 run, taking set four 28-26 and tying the match 2-2. 

In set five, the Rams jumped out to an early 3-0 lead on a Zoe Chesson kill. The Blue Bears fought back tying the game at 9-9. Lexis Tatum sparked a 6-0 run with a kill 10-9, then closed out the set with the game-winning kill.  The Rams took set five 15-9 and the match 3-2.
