Women's Basketball Drops Season Opener to Frostburg

FROSTBURG, M.D. - The Winston-Salem State University women's basketball team fell in its season opener 66-63 to Frostburg State University Friday night.

The Rams moved to 0-1 (0–0 CIAA) on the season. 

Sierra Hunter led the Rams with a double-double of 12 points and 11 rebounds, while Chloe Williams scored 13 points and Jakaiya Mack chipped in with 11 points.

Quick Inside the Numbers
The Rams went 28-of-63 from the field, 5-of-9 from the free-throw line, and 2-of-10 from three.  The Rams grabbed 34 rebounds, and scored 44 points in the paint, 18 points off turnovers, and 14 bench points. 

How it Happened
In the first quarter, the Rams jumped out to an early 12-2 lead on a La'Niya Simes lay-up. With 5:17 left WSSU would extend their lead to18-5 on a Chloe Williams lay-up, with 2:53 left. La'Niya Simes gave the Rams a 22-8 lead on a lay-up with 32 seconds left, taking a 22-8 lead going into the second quarter. 

In the second quarter, Chloe Williams gave the Rams a 28-12 lead on a jumper with 5:56 remaining. The Bobcats answered back with a 7-0 run, making the score 28-19 with 3:50 left. Sierra Hunter pushed the lead to 15 points 34-19, on a lay-up with 58 seconds remaining. The Rams took a 34-19 lead into halftime. 

In the third quarter, Jakaiya Mack made the score 38-19 on a lay-up with 8:39 left. Kierran Walker knocked down a three-pointer, giving the Rams a 45-33 lead with 4:43 left. The Bobcats answered back with an 11-0 run, making the score 45-44 with 1:45 remaining.  Sierra Hunter stopped the run with a lay-up, making the score 47-44 with 1:21 left. Chloe Williams pushed the lead back to five points 51-46, with a lay-up with 10 seconds left. The Rams went into the fourth quarter leading 51-46.

In the fourth quarter, with the score 52-46, the Bobcats went on a 6-0 run tying the game 52-52 with 6:21 left. Sierra Hunter put the Rams back ahead 54-52 on a jumper with 6:03 remaining. With the score 61-57 Bobcats, Christian McLean cut it down to 61-59 on a lay-up with 42 seconds left. Down 64-60, Karina Scott knocked down a deep three-pointer, with 27 seconds left, making the score 64-63. With a few seconds remaining Sierra Hunter scored a lay-up but was called for the offensive foul to seal the deal for Frostburg.

The Lady Rams will return to action tomorrow November 9th taking on West Virginia Wesleyan College. Tip-off is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. inside Bobcat Arena.
