Women's Basketball Drops Conference Opener to Virginia Union

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Winston-Salem State University women's basketball team fell in its conference opener against Virginia Union University 70-53, inside the C.E. Gaines Center Thursday afternoon. 

The Rams moved to (2-6, 0–1 CIAA) on the season.

La'Niya Simes led the Rams with a double-double of 15 points and 10 rebounds, followed by Karina Scott with seven points. 

Quick Inside the Numbers
The Rams went 18-of-55 from the field, 3-of-8 from three, and 14-of-28 from the free-throw line. They grabbed 33 rebounds, and scored 26 points in the paint, 16 points off turnovers, 11 second chance points, 11 fast break points, and 29 bench points. 

How it Happened
The Panthers jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the first quarter. A Jakaiya Mack lay-up cut the score to 5-4. With the score 11-6 Panthers, the Rams went on a 6-0 run taking the lead 12-11 on a La'Niya Simes lay-up. The Panthers took a 17-14 lead into the second quarter.

In the second quarter, Chloe Williams and one tied the game at 17-17. The Rams went on a 7-0 run, taking a 26-21 lead on an Alana Biosse and one. The Panthers answered back with a 6-0 run, taking a 27-26 lead. Tolisha Walker put the Rams back in front 28-27 on a jumper and the Rams took a 30-29 lead into halftime.

In the third quarter, a Kierran Walker three-pointer gave the Rams a 33–31 lead. A Sierra Hunter free-throw extended the lead to 36-33. The Panthers went on a 12-1 run, taking a 45-37 lead. The Panthers extended their lead on a 5-0 run 50-39. The Panthers took a 52-39 lead into the third quarter.

In the fourth quarter, a Panthers three-pointer extended their lead to 55-39. Two La'Niya Simes free-throws chipped the lead down to 57-43. Karina Scott hit a big three-pointer, cutting the score to 62-52. The Panthers closed out the game on an 8-1 run.

The women will return to action on Tuesday, December 17th hosting Bowie State University. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. inside the C.E. Gaines Center. As a reminder, all December home games will be free entry with a canned good.
