WSSU Men’s Basketball Earns First Victory of the Season, Defeats Carolina Christian Monday Night

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.– The Winston-Salem State University men's basketball team overwhelmed Carolina Christian University 97-48, inside the C.E. Gaines Center giving Coach Thompson his first victory in his coaching era. 

 The Rams improved to (2-4, 0-0 CIAA) on the season.

Tyre Boykin led the Rams with a season-high 22 points, Micah Jones scored 13 points, and Welsey Tubbs III and Lance Gill chipped in with 10 points.

Quick Inside the Numbers
The Rams went 39-of-74 from the field, 10-of-27 from the free-throw line, and 9-of–18 from three. They scored 54 points in the paint, grabbed 53 rebounds, 32 second chance points, and 34 points off of turnovers, 25 fast break points, and 56 bench points.

How it Happened
In the first half, the Rams went on an 8-0 run, taking an 8-3 lead on a Welsey Tubbs III lay-up with 17:16 to play. The Centurions cut the lead to 11-6, on a three-pointer with (15:52). Jaiden Thompson began a 12-0 run, on a three-pointer extending the Rams lead to 14-6 with 14:48 remaining in the half.  A Micah Jones lay-up made the score 23-6 (12:26).  The Centurions answered back with an 8-0 run, cutting the score to 26-14 with (10:32). The Rams went on an 11-0 run (37-14) on a Tyre Boykin and-one with 8:37 on the clock. Back-to-back three-pointers by Tyre Boykins gave the Rams a 47-20 lead with 3:42 remaining in the half. The Rams went into halftime leading 52-28. 

In the second half, the Rams went on an 8-0 run, extending their lead to 60-28 on a Welsey Tubbs III and-one (18:37). A Lance Gill three-pointer made the score 67-33 with 14:00 remaining in the game. A Tyre Boykins lay-up extended the Rams lead to 78-35 with 10:45 remaining in the game. The Rams saw action from every player on the roster as they defeated Carolina Christian 97-48.
