Women’s Basketball Heads to St. Augustine’s Wednesday, Hosts Claflin Saturday on Senior Day

WINSTON-SALEM N.C.- The Winston-Salem State University women's basketball team will travel to Raleigh, North Carolina, to take on St. Augustine's on Wednesday, February 7th. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 inside Emery Gymnasium. 
The Lady Rams will host Claflin University hosting a senior day on Saturday, February 10th. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. inside the C.E. Gaines Center.

Series Information vs. St. Augustine's University 
Since 2006 this will be the 29th match-up between the Rams and Falcons. The Rams lead the series 22-6. This will be the second match-up between the Rams and Falcons this season. The Rams won the first match-up 69-64 on. January 18th, 2024. 
 
Series Information vs. Claflin University 
Since 2005 the Rams lead the series 9-3. This will be the second match-up between the Rams and Panthers this season. The Panthers won the first match-up 67-58 on. January 20th, 2024. 
 
Last Time Out
The Rams defeated Livingstone College 68-62 on Saturday, January  3rd. Amaya Tucker led the Rams with 22 points, which moved her up to the number two spot on the All-Time scoring list with 1,452 points. Sierra Hunter added 10 points and four rebounds, while La'Niya Simes chipped in with nine points and five rebounds. 
 
Rams Returners:
The Rams brought back ten returners from last year's team. Sophomores Aaliyah Balser, Jakaiya Mack, Alexandria Warren, junior Kennedi Simmons, redshirt juniors Erin Hall, Taniah Wilkins, senior Hadiya Balser, redshirt seniors Jainaya Jones, Makayla Smith, and graduate student Amaya Tucker.
 
Rams Newcomers:
The Rams welcomed in newcomers Tori Crowder, Haley Dalton, La'Niya Simes, Chloe Williams, Christiana McLean, Starasia Bell-Freeman, Tolisha Walker, and Sierra Hunter.
 
CIAA Preseason:
Amaya Tucker and Kennedi Simmons were named to the 2022-2023 All-CIAA Women's Basketball Preseason Team Backcourt. Tucker is returning as the reigning CIAA Player of the Year. She finished last season averaging 15.6 points per game and led the Rams in three-point percentage with 40%. Tucker also shot 74% from the free-throw line. Simmons was second on the Rams in scoring, averaging 9.1 points per game. Kennedi shot 72% from the free-throw line.
 
CIAA Weekly Awards 
  • Jakaiya Mack was named CIAA Player of the Week for week seven.
  • La'Niya Simes was named CIAA Rookie of the Week for weeks 10, 11, 12 and 13.
 
Scouting Report
The Rams are led in scoring by Amaya Tucker with 11.7 points followed by Kennedi Simmons with 9.2 points. The Rams are averaging 59.2 points per game.
 
St. Augustine's University (10-10, 4-4 CIAA) 
The Falcons fell to Fayetteville State University 72-62 on Saturday, February 3rd. Taniyah Greene led the Falcons with 14 points, followed by Joscelyne Meyers with 12 points and Lauren Banks chipped in with 10 points. Taniyah is averaging 13.4 points a game, followed by Lauren Banks with 13.2 points per game. The Falcons are scoring 67.5 points a game, while giving up 60.8 points a game.
 
Claflin University (12-8, 6-6 CIAA)
The Panthers defeated Shaw University 87-77 on Saturday, February 3rd. Lauren Scott led the Panthers with 31 points and eight rebounds, followed by Nya Morris with 23 points and six rebounds, and Leigha Harris with 21 points and five rebounds. Lauren Scott is the Panthers leading scorer averaging 16.5 points a game, followed by Nya Banks with 15.1 points per game. The Panthers are averaging 74.3 points per game.
 
Up Next 
The Rams will hit the road to Charlotte, North Carolina, on Wednesday, February 13th. The Lady Rams will take on divisional rival Johnson C. Smith University. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. inside Brayboy Gymnasium.
