Women’s Basketball Travels to Virginia State Thursday, Return Home to Play Claflin Saturday

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.- The Winston-Salem State University women's basketball team will travel to Petersburg, Virginia on Thursday, January 16th, taking on Virginia State University. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. inside the Multipurpose Center. 

The Lady Rams will return home on Saturday, January 18th, taking on Claflin University. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. inside the C.E. Gaines Center.

Series Information vs. Virginia State University

Since 2006, this will be the 18th meeting between the Rams and Trojans. The Rams have won the last 3-out-of-4 match-ups. Last season the Trojans defeated the Rams  72-62 on January 6th, 2024. 

Series Information vs. Claflin University

Since 2005 the Rams have led the series 9-5. The Panthers took both match-ups last season. The last time the Panthers defeated the Rams 56-45, on February 10th, 2024 
 
Rams Returners:
The Rams brought back six returners from last year's team: Sophomore La'Niya Simes, juniors Alexandria Warren, Jakaiya Mack, and Chloe Williams, senior Christiana McLean, graduate student Sierra Hunter, and Tolisha Walker.

Rams Newcomers:
During the off-season, the Rams welcomed in freshman Alana Biosse, sophomore's Khauri Little, Karina Scott, Zion Duncan. junior Kierran Walker, graduate students Jaleesa Lanier and Maya- Madison Walker.

CIAA Preseason/Polls
Jakaiya Mack was named to the 2024-2025 All-CIAA Women's Basketball Preseason Team Frontcourt. Mack finished last season playing in 15 games and started in 12. She averaged 23 minutes with 8 points per game, was 45% FG, and 57% FT. The women were selected to finish tenth. 

Last Time Out 
The Rams fell to St. Andrews University 45-50 on Monday, January 13th. Kierran Walker led the Rams with 14 points, followed by Jakaiya Mack with nine points. 

Scouting Report 
The Rams' leading scorer is Christiana McLean averaging 10.3 points a game, followed by La'Niya Simes with 7.7 points The Rams are averaging 56.7 points a game. 

Virginia State University (11-4, 4-1 CIAA) 
The Trojans defeated West Virginia State University 90-85 on Monday, January 13th. The Trojans are led in scoring by Anii Harris with 13.9 points followed by Amesha Miller with 13.1 points. Virginia State is averaging 66.7 points per game. 

Claflin University (7-6, 3-3 CIAA) 
The Panthers defeated Allen University 78-62 on Monday, January 8th. As of January 8th, the Panthers are led in scoring by Nya Morris with 18.9 points followed by Janelle Sample with 9.4 points. Claflin is averaging 66.3 points per game.

The women will host Fayetteville State University on Monday, January 20th. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. inside C.E. Gaines Center. The theme is Greek Day.
