Rams Battled Hard but Fall to Virginia State Thursday Night

PETERSBURG, V.A.– The Winston-Salem State University men's basketball team fell in a late comeback to VSU 74-68 inside the Multipurpose Center.  

The Rams moved to (3-10, 0-3 CIAA) on the season.

Tyre Boykin led the Rams with 21 points, followed by Micah Jones with 18 points, Abou Camara with 12 points and eight rebounds, and Jeremy Dixon chipped in with 10 points.  

Quick Inside the Numbers
The Rams went 23-of-49 from the field, 20-of-24 from the free-throw line, and 2-of–9 from three. The Rams grabbed 22 rebounds, 36 points in the paint, 16 forced turnovers, 14 points off turnovers, and 12 bench points.

How It Happened 
In the first half, Tyre Boykin gave the Rams a 6-3 lead on a three-pointer (18:08). The Trojans went on a 6-2 run, tying the game 9-9 (16:04). Jeremy Dixon extended the Rams lead to 13-9 on a jumper (13:53). VSU went on a 6-2 run, giving them a 26-21 lead (5:12). The Trojans outscored the Rams 12-6 for the remainder of the half. VSU took a 38-27 lead into halftime. 

In the second half, the Trojans went on a 9-4 run, extending their lead to 47-31 (16:31). The Rams went on a 15-0 run, cutting the score 51-46 on a Tyre Boykin lay-up (9:45). VSU answered back with a 6-0 run, pushing the score 57-46 (8:52). Tyre Boykin answered back with a three-pointer, making the score 57-49 (8:14). The Trojans extended their lead to 10 points 63-53 (5:37). Three Micah Jones free-throws cut the VSU lead back to single digits 65-58 with 2:38 left in the game. A Tyre Boykin lay-up made the score 68-64 with 34 seconds remaining in the game.

The men will return home on Saturday, January 18th, hosting Claflin University. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 inside the C.E. Gaines Center. The theme is Throwback Day.
