Lady Rams Drop Close Contest to Claflin Saturday Afternoon

Winston-Salem, N.C. -  The Winston-Salem State University women's basketball team comeback fell short to Claflin University 57-55 inside the C.E. Gaines Center. 

The Rams moved to (3-12, 0–6 CIAA, 0-1 South) on the season.

Jakaiya Mack led the Rams with 14 points, followed by Chloe Williams with 11 points, and Maya Madison-Walker chipped in with 11 rebounds. 

Quick Inside the Numbers
The Rams went 19-of-59 from the field, 5-of-26 from three, and 12-of-21 from the free-throw line. The Rams grabbed 45 rebounds, scored 26 points in the paint, 15 points off turnovers, 22 second chance points and 15 bench points. 

How It Happened
In the first quarter, Jakaiya Mack got the Rams on with a lay-up 2-0 (9:14). Claflin went on an 8-1 run, taking a 13-6 lead (1:16). The Panthers took a 15-8 lead into the 2nd quarter.

In the second quarter, La'Niya Simes hit a three-pointer making the score 15-11 (8:40). The Panthers went on an 8-1 run, extending their lead to 23-12 (3:42). The Rams closed out the half on a 4-0 run. The Panthers took a 23-16 lead into halftime.

The Rams went on a 7-2 run in the third quarter, cutting the score to 25-23 (6:20) on a Kierran Walker three-pointer. A Maya Madison-Walker and-one gave the Rams a 26-25 lead (5:47). A Kierran Walker three-pointer gave the Rams a 33-30 lead (3:38). The Panthers closed out the quarter on a 13-3 run, taking a 45-36 lead into the fourth quarter. 

In the fourth quarter, a Jakaiya Mack jumper made the score 48-45 Claflin (5:46). Chloe Williams tied the game 53-53 on a lay-up with 2:32 remaining in the game. Claflin took the lead on a three-pointer with 2:08 left. Jakaiya Mack made the score 56-55 on a lay-up (1:24). Claflin went 1-of-2 from the free-throw line, making the score 57-55 with 4 seconds remaining. After a WSSU timeout Karina Scott missed the game-winning three-pointer.

The women will host Fayetteville State University on Monday, January 20th. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. inside C.E. Gaines Center. The theme is Greek Day.
