Lady Rams Pick-up First Conference Win in Overtime at Shaw Wednesday

Raleigh, N.C. - The Winston-Salem State University women's basketball team wins its first conference game versus Shaw University 62-58 in overtime, inside C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium. 

The Rams improved to (4-13, 1–7 CIAA, 1-2 South) on the season. 

Jakaiya Mack led the Rams with 19 points and seven steals, followed by Christina McLean with a double-double of 16 points and 11 rebounds. La'Niya Simes chipped in with a season-high 15 points. 

Quick Inside the Numbers
The Rams went 22-of-75 from the field, 1-of-10 from three, 17-of-20 from the free-throw line. They grabbed 55 rebounds, and scored 18 points in the paint, 32 points off turnovers, 24 forced turnovers, 20 steals, and 58 bench points. 

How It Happened
In the first quarter, Karina Scott hit a three-pointer giving the Rams a 3-0 run (6:17). A La'Niya Simes lay-up tied the game to 7-7, with 22 seconds left in the quarter. 

In the second quarter, the Rams went on a 14-2 run, extending their lead to 21-9 on a Jakaiya Mack lay-up (5:14). The Bears went on a 9-2 run, cutting the Rams lead down to 23-18 (2:01). Christiana McLean answered back with a jumper, making the score 25-18 with 1:01 remaining in the half. The Rams took a 25-20 lead into halftime. 

In the third quarter, the Bears went on an 11-2 run, taking a 31-27 lead (5:39). Jakaiya Mack answered back with an and-one, cutting the score to 31-30 (5:16). Two Tolisha Walker free throws gave the Rams a 35-34 lead (5:00). The Rams went on a 6-0 run, giving them a 41-36 lead on two Jakaiya Mack free-throws. The Rams took a 41-39 lead into the fourth quarter. 

In the fourth quarter, Christina McLean gave the Rams a 47-44 lead on a jumper (6:32). An Alexandria Warren free-throw scored 51-50 with 50 seconds remaining in the game. Tolisha Walker tied the game at 52-52 with 5 seconds remaining in the game. The Bears missed the game-winning three-pointer sending the game into overtime.

In overtime, La'Niya Simes gave the Rams a 57-56 lead with two free throws (2:25). With the score tied at 57-57, Jakaiya Mack gave the Rams a 59-57 lead on a lay-up with 32 seconds left in the game. La'Niya Simes sealed the deal for the Rams by hitting two free throws, making the score 62-58 with 4 seconds left in the contest.
