WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Winston-Salem State University softball team kicked off the 2025 campaign with a double victory over Benedict College on Saturday evening.
The Rams won game one, 2-0, and game two, 8-4 to open the season with a 2-0 record.
How it Happened – Game 1
The game was evenly knotted at 0-0 till the bottom of the sixth inning and the Rams took a 2-0 lead. First, BreAnna Steel hit a single to left field to score
Layla Smith and
Micaiah Cooper hit a double to left field scoring Steele.
Jyla Thomas pitched the entire game faced 28 batters and had 13 strikeouts.
How it Happened – Game 2
The Tigers got on the scoreboard first scoring two runs in the top of the first inning. They added a run in the top of the second inning to increase their lead to 3-0. Benedict added one more run in the top of the fourth inning before the Rams answered back with a two-run homerun from
Makayla Vinson. The bats stayed out as the Rams added three more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to tie the game 4-4. It was all WSSU the rest of the game as they added insurance runs in the bottom of the fifth and sixth innings.
Nevaeh Cruz pitched 4.0 innings and had three strikeouts and
Jyla Thomas came in and pitched 3.0 innings with five strikeouts.
WSSU will be back in action on February 14-15 at the 2025 UMO Softball Round Robin hosted by the University of Mount Olive in Mount Olive, North Carolina.
