RALEIGH – The Winston-Salem State University softball team went 2-1 on day two of the CIAA Roundup hosted by Shaw University at Walnut Creek Athletic Complex.
After defeating Bluefield State and Virginia Union but falling to Bowie State the Rams move to 8-6 (3-1 CIAA).
After a rain delay, the Rams came back and beat Bluefield State 8-4 to begin day two of the CIAA Roundup.
How It Happened
The Rams got on board first scoring three runs in the top of the third inning, including a home run from BreAnna Steel and then scored two runs in the top of the fourth inning to take a 5-0 lead. The Big Blue answered back with four runs in the bottom of the fourth to come within one. The rain halted the game and WSSU still came out hot on Saturday afternoon to score one run in the top of the sixth and two runs in the top of the seventh to take the 8-4 victory.
Nevaeh Cruz won the game pitching 5.0 innings with one strikeout and
Jyla Thomas pitched 2.0 innings with four strikeouts.
In the second game, WSSU defeated Virginia Union 7-5.
How It Happened
WSSU scored two runs in the bottom of the second inning to take a 2-0 lead over the Panthers. Virginia Union came within one scoring one run in the top of the fourth inning. WSSU added three runs in the bottom of fifth inning to take a 5-1 lead. The Panthers scored four runs in the top of the sixth inning to tie the game at 5-5. WSSU sealed the deal with two more runs to win the game 7-5.
BreAnna Steele pitched 5.0 innings with four strikeouts and moved to 2-1 on the season and
Jyla Thomas pitched 2.0 innings with one strikeout.
Then, the Rams took on the Bulldogs of Bowie State University and fell 9-3 to close out the night.
How it Happened
WSSU took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning, but Bowie State answered back scoring two runs in the bottom of the first. BSU scored six more runs in the bottom of the third inning to take a 8-0 lead. WSSU answered back scoring two runs in the top of the fourth to cut into Bowie State's lead, but the Bulldogs scored one more run in the bottom of the fifth to claim the 9-3 victory.
Nevaeh Cruz threw 2.1 innings with one strikeout and
Jyla Thomas pitched 3.2 innings with five strikeouts.
The Rams will conclude the CIAA roundup taking on Lincoln University (Pa) and Virginia State on March 22 at 11:00 am and 4:00 pm respectively.
