WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Tory Woodbury couldn't have asked for a better day to give Winston-Salem State University football fans a preview of his first Rams team.
Several hundred red-and-black clad fans came out to greet the new head coach and his Rams at Glenn High School in Kernersville for a sunny Saturday afternoon Spring Game.
The "Red Sea of Sound" band and the "Powerhouse Cheerleaders" performed. Food trucks and Rams merchandise stands added to the enthusiastic atmosphere.
"I had a chance to look out up there and it was surreal playing at my old high school," said Woodbury, who played in only a handful of games at Glenn, before walking on and developing into a star at WSSU on his way to a six-year NFL career. "I haven't had a chance to really process."
The defense dominated Saturday, winning 35-10 using a scoring system that rewarded the defense for accomplishments including stops and turnovers. No official statistics were kept.
The offense didn't score a touchdown until the final play, when quarterback Manuel Mitchell found Taron Biles-Walker open in the right corner of the end zone on a 4-yard pass.
But Woodbury didn't criticize the offense, which had only 15 practices to learn his new system. With a single back, the Rams deployed four receivers, usually spread wide.
"I think all phases of the team were good," he said, stressing that he was most concerned about fundamentals. You shouldn't be fooled by the score … Overall, I would give us maybe a "B" or "B-."
Woodbury said he was especially happy with the team's discipline. Only one penalty – a late hit in the first half – was called.
The game lasted about 1 hour, 30 minutes, including a short halftime. Beginning late in the third quarter, the offense began possessions in the red zone at the 25-yard-line.
Gilberto Lorenzana kicked field goals of 44, 36 and 22 yards. He missed from 39 yards. All kicking was done without defenders.
With consistent pressure and good secondary play, the defense down the passing game throughout the game. Defensive standouts included linebacker Avir Johnson, who had multiple sacks, and back Zy Brown, who had an interception.
Johnson and Biles-Walker were with Woodbury last season at Norfolk State.
