WSSU Mourns the Passing of Hall of Famer Harold “Funny” Kitt

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Winston-Salem State University Athletics family mourns the loss of WSSU Hall of Famer Harold "Funny" Kitt, a beloved figure whose impact on the university and the Winston-Salem community will never be forgotten.

Known affectionately by generations of Rams fans, alumni, and student-athletes as "Funny," Kitt was more than a Hall of Famer — he was a symbol of WSSU pride, tradition, and spirit. His presence around the university and athletics events brought joy, laughter, and encouragement to everyone he encountered.

Kitt's legacy at Winston-Salem State extended far beyond athletics. He became a cherished ambassador for the university, creating lifelong relationships throughout the Rams community while representing the passion and family atmosphere that defines WSSU Athletics.

Kitt finished his Rams career with 1,271 points in 78 games. He averaged 16.3 points per game. He led WSSU in scoring during the 1971-72 season and again in 1973-74. His senior season was his best, as he averaged more than 22 points per game and earned All-CIAA honors. He also helped bring "Showtime" back to Winston-Salem basketball. In January 1972, Kitt scored 27 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and added six assists in an 89-56 win over North Carolina Central. He shot 10-for-15 from the field that night. The performance gave WSSU fans a flash of the style and excitement they had come to expect under Gaines.

As a member of the WSSU Hall of Fame, Kitt's contributions and dedication to the university remain permanently woven into the history of Winston-Salem State Athletics.

The Winston-Salem State University Athletics Department extends its deepest condolences to the Kitt family, friends, former classmates, teammates, and all who were touched by his life and legacy.
