Orangeburg, S.C. – Winston-Salem State University softball team went a perfect 2-0 on day one of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) defeating Bowie State and Virginia Union to head to the final four of the tournament.
How it Happened – Game 1
The Rams scored two runs on two hits to take an early 2-0 lead over the Bulldogs in the top of the first inning. BSU responded with one run in the bottom of the first to cut into the Rams lead. WSSU took a 4-1 lead in the top of the third after scoring two runs on two hits and four errors on the Bulldogs defense.
Riley Demers hit a home run in the top of the fourth inning to give the Rams a 5-1 lead. Demers hit a 2RBI double in the top of the seventh to increase the Rams lead to 7-1 and seal the game.
Koralie Morin pitched the entire game and had nine strikeouts.
How it Happened – Game 2
The bats stayed hot for the Rams as they scored two runs on two hits in the top of the first inning to take an early 2-0 lead over the Panthers of Virginia Union. The Rams added another run in the top of the second inning to take a 3-0 lead. The Panthers cut into the Rams lead, scoring one run in the bottom of the second inning. WSSU increased its lead in the top of the third inning, scoring five runs on four hits to go up 8-1. The Panthers Jailyn Myrick hit a homer in the bottom of the third to make the score 8-2. Virginia Union cut into the Rams lead in the bottom of the fourth inning, scoring two more runs to make the score 8-4. WSSU added a run in the top of the fifth inning to increase its lead to 9-4.
Asyah Smith hit a three-run homer to increase its lead to 12-4 in the top of the sixth inning and seal the win.
Jyla Thomas pitched 5.1 innings with six strikeouts and
Koralie Morin pitched 0.2 innings with one strikeout.
The Rams advance to the semifinals and will take on the number one seed in the south, Claflin University on Friday, May 8 at 3:00 p.m. inside the Orangeburg Recreation Center.
