ORANGEBURG, S.C. – The Winston-Salem State University softball team's Cinderella postseason run came to an end in the CIAA Championship as the Rams fell to Claflin University, 7-6, at the Orangeburg Recreation Center.
The Rams finished the season with a 12-21 overall record.
Jyla Thomas and
Riley Demers were named to the CIAA All-Tournament Team.
Claflin got on the board first with a run in the bottom of the first inning. Back-to-back home runs from
Jyla Thomas and
Aaliyah Rodriguez gave the Rams a 2-1 lead at the top of the third inning. The Panthers responded with a run in the bottom of the third to tie the game, 2-2.
Koralie Morin hit a two-RBI home run in the top of the fourth inning to give the Rams a 4-2 lead. Claflin scored four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to take a 6-4 lead. The Rams scored two runs in the top of the sixth inning to tie the game to 6-6.
Claflin's Aniyah Jackson hit a walk-off single, scoring McKenzie Whitener in the bottom of the seventh inning to secure the win.
Jyla Thomas pitched 6.1 innings and recorded seven strikeouts.
The Rams finished the game with six runs on 11 hits and two errors, while Claflin recorded seven runs on 10 hits and one error.
