Madelyn McGrath joined the Winston-Salem State University Department of Athletics in July 2025 as an Assistant Athletic Trainer, bringing a diverse and impressive clinical background to the Rams' sports medicine program and is poised to make an immediate impact on the health and wellbeing of WSSU student-athletes.
McGrath arrived in Winston-Salem after completing her Master of Science in Athletic Training at High Point University in May 2025, where she earned her degree following a series of high-profile clinical rotations across multiple sports and healthcare settings. She earned her Bachelor of Science from Concordia University Chicago in 2023.
Most recently, McGrath served as an athletic training student with the Charlotte Anthem Rugby club at the United States Performance Center in Charlotte, North Carolina, where she evaluated, diagnosed, and treated acute and chronic musculoskeletal injuries in professional male rugby athletes. She also collaborated with a multidisciplinary healthcare team on post-operative care and general medical conditions and coordinated video monitoring systems for on-field concussion protocol management.
Prior to her time in Charlotte, McGrath spent a full season with the Wake Forest University women's soccer program, accumulating 642 clinical hours. During that time, she contributed to post-operative rehabilitation for ACL reconstruction and distal fibular fractures, administered clinical SCAT6 and VOMS concussion evaluations, and implemented return-to-play protocols. She also completed a clinical rotation at Novant Health Orthopedics and Sports Medicine in Winston-Salem, gaining experience in reading X-rays, MRIs, and CT scans and applying splints, casts, and braces for a variety of orthopedic pathologies.
Additional clinical experience includes a rotation with High Point University men's lacrosse, where she performed manual therapy techniques including scraping, cupping, and soft tissue mobilizations, and utilized therapeutic modalities such as electrical stimulation and therapeutic ultrasound. McGrath also provided coverage at Mount Tabor High School, gaining valuable experience in the secondary school setting across multiple sports.
McGrath holds a Sound Assisted Soft Tissue Massage (SASTM) certification and is certified in CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers. She is also a former Graduate SGA Representative for the High Point University Athletic Training Club.
