Final Stats
BOONE, N.C. -- Danielle Edwards (Winston-Salem, N.C.) scored 16 points and matched a career-high with 16 rebounds to lead Appalachian State University women's basketball to a 64-51 triumph over Winston-Salem State on Tuesday night at the Holmes Center.
Ten of Edwards' game-high 16 boards came off the offensive glass, while her 16 points were also tops in the contest. She also sank 6-of-7 free throws to help Appalachian overcome a sluggish first half and snap a three-game losing streak.
With the win the Mountaineers improve to 2-4 on the season, while Winston-Salem State drops to 3-5 overall. For the first time this season, ASU out-rebounded its opponent, finishing with 49 boards, 22 on the offensive end. Winston Salem State compiled just 31 rebounds in the contest. The Mountaineers also recorded a team season high with 23 assists on the night.
Senior Eboni Kirby (Tallahassee, Fla.) added 11 points and seven rebounds in the win for Appalachian, while freshmen Whitney Ketner (Spartanburg, S.C.) and Greteya Kelley (Suwanee, Ga.) chipped in eight and six points, respectively.
The Rams were led by Candace Saunders and Kadina Baldwin with 10 points apiece. Tiffany Tonkins hit the glass hard for WSSU, finishing the night with a team-high 10 rebounds.
Coming out of halftime, Appalachian led by just one at 24-23. ASU quickly extended its lead to nine at 35-24, but WSSU used a 13-2 run to tie the game at 37 with just under 13 minutes to play in the game.
Kiki Conyers (Tallahassee, Fla.) hit a three to swing the momentum towards Appalachian, giving ASU a 40-37 lead with 11:46 to play. The Mountaineers outscored their opponent, 22-14 in the final 10 minutes to defeat Winston-Salem State, 64-51.
After losing the opening tip-off, the Mountaineers jumped out to a quick 13-5 lead with just over 13 minutes to play in the first half. The Rams scored eight unanswered points in the next two minutes to tie the game at 13. WSSU took its first lead of the night at the 8:20 mark at 15-14.
After a three-minute scoring drought by both teams, Appalachian State regained the lead at 24-23 with 13 seconds left in the half, to take a one-point lead into the locker room.
Ketner led all scorers in the first half with six, while Edwards had a game-high eight rebounds in the first 20 minutes of the contest as she turned in a stellar performance.
With the loss, the Lady Rams fall to 3-5 on the season (0-1 CIAA). WSSU returns to action on December 17, 2005 at 2:00 p.m. as they play host to Pfeiffer in the C.E. Gaines Center.
