CHARLOTTE, NC - WSSU pitcher Amber Shore hit Nicole Villareal with the bases loaded in the bottom of the eighth inning in a game that was tied 4-4 to force Nikia Beachem across the plate as the Johnson C. Smith University Lady Golden Bulls defeated Winston-Salem State in the first game of a CIAA softball doubleheader in Charlotte, NC on Wednesday afternoon.
The Lady Rams, leading by one run in the top of the eighth inning could not hold onto the lead as a pair of hit batsmen led to two runs and the win for the Golden Bulls in the bottom of the eighth inning.
WSSU's Amber Shore pitched a complete-game, allowing only five runs while striking out nine Lady Golden Bulls. However, she was saddled with the loss, only her second CIAA loss of the season as she fell to 9-9 overall (9-2 CIAA).
The loss drops the Lady Rams into a tie with the Lady Golden Bulls in the CIAA Western Division.
Earning the win for JCSU was Theresa Vorwerk who moved to 17-7 over with the victory.
WSSU falls to 19-17 overall and 17-4 in the CIAA with the loss while Johnson C. Smith moves to 28-11 overall and improves to 16-4 in the CIAA with the win.
The two teams will return to action at 4:00 pm when they take to the diamond for the second game of the twin-bill.
