Lady Rams' Rally Falls Short in 7-6 Loss at Catawba

Feb. 26, 2011

Box Score

SALISBURY, NC - The Winston-Salem State Lady Rams (4-7) brought their offense, but fell one run shy in a 7-6 loss at Catawba on the second day of the Catawba Invitational softball tournament. The Lady Rams gave a great effort on both sides of the ball, but fell just short in the loss.

As a team, the Lady Rams had a solid day at the plate with seven team hits, including home runs by senior infielder Kayla Woodbury (3) and sophomore infielder Britney Cato (1), but some clutch defense by the Indians kept the Lady Rams on the wrong side of the scoreboard. Cato finished the day with a two-for-three effort at the plate with a run scored and three RBI.

Both teams jumped out early when WSSU opened the game with a pair of first inning runs, only to be answered by a pair of Catawba second inning runs. It was a Cato two-RBI double that put the Lady Rams on the scoreboard first. Cato would put the Lady Rams back on the scoreboard in the fourth inning when she connected on a solo home run that put the Lady Rams on top 3-2. But things would go bad fast for the Lady Rams as the team allowed five fourth inning runs on a pair of Lady Rams fielding errors that left WSSU trailing 7-3.

The Lady Rams would chip away at their deficit with a pair of fifth inning runs on a two-RBI homer by Woodbury and a sixth-inning score on a wild pitch, but the late rally was not enough as the Lady Rams ended the day with the tough loss.

The Lady Rams return to action this afternoon when the team takes on Lock Haven at 2:00 p.m. For more information on Lady Rams softball, contact the WSSU Office of Athletic Media Relations at (336) 750-2143 or log on to www.WSSURams.com.
