PEMBROKE, NC - The Winston-Salem State Lady Rams (0-1) faced some tough competition in their season opener as the team took a 9-0 loss to the California (Pa.) Vandals at the UNC-Pembroke Invitational, Sunday morning. The Lady Rams struggles on both sides of the ball, totaling just three team hits while allowing 12 hits to the Vulcans.
The WSSU struggles began early as the team allowed two runs in both the second and third innings. After allowing three fourth inning runs, the Lady Rams got their defensive efforts in gear, holding the Vulcans scoreless in the fifth inning to keep the game alive, but a California (Pa.) two-run home run in the sixth inning ended the game for the Lady Rams.
The Lady Rams reached base just five times in the tough loss with senior Kayla Woodbury, sophomore Nikki Lynch, and sophomore Shantel Haskins notching just one hit each in the loss.
WSSU sophomore pitcher Brittany Lane (0-1) took the pitching loss, going all six innings and finishing the game with six strikeouts.
